Once Again, The Mooch Mentions The Finance Gap With Celtic. But What’s Behind This?

Once again yesterday, at this latest press conference, The Mooch went out of his way to mention, again, the finance gap between his club and ours. We all know it exists.

He is the first Ibrox manager to mention it more than the Celtic sites do.

And I continue to be curious about the choices he makes, and the things he chooses to talk about.

What is the purpose of this? Is he sending a warning to the board? Is he fire-proofing himself for eventual failure, so that he can tell clubs he might want to manage in future that he did well here but was simply outgunned? Is it the fans he’s getting the excuses in early for? Is he putting Wilson under pressure to get the signings they do make right?

Or is it all of the above? What exactly is his game?

I’ll tell you what we do know; this is about his own self-interest and nothing more. This is not about the club, this is about him because he is absolutely 100% in this for himself. I have never seen a more obvious case of a guy on an ego trip.

But the mixed signals he’s sending out are confusing people, and especially amongst the club’s fans. He’s talked about four quality signings, and then bleats about how they won’t be able to spend as much cash as we do?

That’s nonsensical, and their fans know it. They expect a major transfer splurge, and on the one hand he’s promising that and on the other making it clear that they can’t afford it so if this looks weird from our end it must look even crazier to their fans.

I’m just not clear what audience he thinks he’s talking to here or what his objective is. I know I’ve made a lot of jokes at his expense and mocked his bizarre press conferences but I’m trying to analyse this as I would a politician or someone else used to speaking out of both sides of his mouth. I’ve heard a lot of that in my time, but this isn’t that.

This geezer is genuinely veering all over the road and if he wasn’t such a nasty character I might even start to wonder if we should feel sorry for him, because he’s miles out of his depth here and flailing desperately.

And no-one is going to save him from himself.
