The Pro-Ibrox Media Refuses To Accept Where Celtic’s Strength Comes From.

Today a good friend of mine sent me a press cutting on Twitter, it’s a photograph of a newspaper column written by Matthew Lindsay.

It is written in support of Ibrox shareholder Stuart Gibson, and his repeating of this drivel about how we’ve bought our success.

You know that I’m happy that this is the story that won’t die because I think there’s an important psychological advantage to us keeping this idea fresh in Ibrox minds … for all that, the argument is nonsensical.

Celtic has spent more money on the team than they have spent on theirs.

The hard numbers are there, it’s a fact and you cannot spin that any other way.

But every single bit of that spending has been within budget.

Every single penny, until this season, was recouped in sales. Ange has spent more money than any Celtic boss ever has … but he has brought in a fair amount of it on outgoing players as well. His revolution has seen only a modest net spend.

The whole point behind what these people are doing is to devalue our achievements. But in fact all they do is draw attention to them, because our achievements aren’t just those which Ange has secured on the pitch. Our club’s success is built on the strong financial foundations, and it’s these which have allowed us to have money to spend.

The principles our club operates under are amazingly simple. We don’t spend more than we earn.

There it is. Easy.

We do not spend more than we earn, and this means that when we do spend money the onus is on us to get it right.

No club from Ibrox has been content to live within its means for the last 25 years.

They are addicted to spending money. More than they have. More than they earn.

All this talk of how the manager simply has to be backed in the transfer market is the same old people following the same old strategy. Get someone to write a cheque and hope for the best. Hope for interest in a key player. Hope for Champions League qualification. Hope to somehow stop the unstoppable Celtic machine.

Worry how we pay for it some other time.

That’s the extent of their thinking. No-one ever stops to think that it might be a better idea to write off a couple of seasons, buy some young talent and develop them into something that might be a winning squad somewhere down the line. Show some profits. Put some money away for a rainy day. The kind of stuff we do and have been doing for years.

Sooner or later, someone over there, or in the media, has to twig to the fact that we’re strong precisely because we don’t live this petrified hand to mouth existence of theirs where they go on the occasional splurge and then have to find a way to pay for it.

The truth is, and they should be able to see this, that we are not going to drop a lot of points under this manager with this team, so in all probability there is nothing they can do which is guaranteed to catch us, no matter how much money they spend.

Their fans are doing what Ibrox fans have traditionally done.

They refuse to accept that part of our strength – a great part of it – comes from not living the way their club does, beyond its means, constantly reaching into the pockets of some sugar-daddy.

They have no discipline and no inclination towards learning it.

But the media should not be indulging this.

The hacks should not be encouraging this self-destructive and self-defeating path they’ve been on since crawling out of Rangers’ grave, a club which itself died as a consequence of over-extending and spending what they did not have. The media should be calling for restraint, patience and the intelligent use of resources.

Instead you have hacks writing this kind of stuff, playing into the idea that the only way to keep up with Celtic is to spend like we do. If only that was all we did, then that path might lead somewhere other than back to the graveyard.

One of these days the penny will drop and someone over there will realize that UEFA’s financial stability rules mean they can no longer rely on external funding to buy whatever players they want. They have to limit combined player wages and transfer spending to 70% of income, the same as every other club, and the days of running annual 8-figure losses funded by directors is over.

  • Johnny Green says:

Why are the huns not being accused of outspending the remainder of the SPL teams? Not that it matters, if you have cash then you are allowed to spend it on anything you fancy. So who cares what any of them think, we can do what we want with our money so get it right fkn up them.

  • Joe Monaghan says:

F*** them we’re just better at everything family, morals, football, support all the stuff that matters.

    Read it.
Pandering to the “Not much between them Deludamols”.
Keep hitting them with this kind of nonsense and they will never get near us.

What happened to Celts’ ‘biscuit tin’ mentality? These huns ought start making their minds up. HH

FFS, don’t tell me they are all eating spinach?

  • Dora says:

Remember when Stevie spent over 100 million and they got a dodgy Covid league for all that spending.
    Never learn them huns..

  • Johnno says:

So a hun scum media trying to claim that we have bought our superiority in Scottish football?
    Oh really!!!!
Suppose the eejits have to write what is in there overselling and very smelly pants currently, at the thought and fear of Celtic landing yet another treble.

when I saw this this morning I read about 2lines then binned it typical herald from him and the rest the new rangers news

  • Martin.H says:

That’s the latest tack, Celtic are spending money we can’t afford, but they don’t mention, within budget, even on b.b.c. Scotland the quote was Celtic should win because we have more money to spend, never said that two weeks ago when the ibrox club beat them.

  • JOHN SCULLION says:

For every £5 they spend we will spend £100

  • Captain Swing says:

Oddly, I don’t recall any corresponding media criticism of Graeme, Walter or little Dick having ‘bought’ success despite vastly outspending Celtic and in a lot of ways upsetting the equilibrium of Scottish fitba’ which has left us with the two horse race we have now…. apparently, that was fine…

  • Peter Cassidy says:

In football terms Celtic are not big spenders regarding fees but buying big does not guarantee succes look at Chelsea this season. You still need a good manager/coach to get the team to gel and play good football that takes time and money spent wisely thats when you need good management to bring in the finances to let your manager get the players he wants but the club can afford .Them over at Govan who cares what they do or what there cheerleaders say boy they are all hurting badly.

  • Patrick mcdaid says:

Gibson is an idiot full of jealousy hatred ignorance.rangers under murray frauded the tax man spending money they didnt have so they could stay on top of celtic thats only way they did it all and with help from corrupt fraudster jim farry and a few refs who helped rangers get 9 in a row.celtic on other hand play football pay taxes dont cheat dobt pay corrupt refs to influence game rangers are no longer a club but a mire

  • Tony B says:

I hope the meedjits continue to encourage Them to spend money they don’t have.

    Die again ya filthy animals.

  • Eire goCeltic says:

He is alienating himself from other Rangers investors. He is talking the Club prospects down.
There is nothing wrong with being second best. The team is very good. Celtic FC is outstanding.
When Gers sacked Gentleman Gio, a top coach for Feyenoord and Gers, they flushed 4 mill quid or more down the sewer. What did they pay for Mickey (c 2mill). Completely unnecessary. Did not make sense. I think his money is talking: “get us out of here”

  • Eldraco says:

Having a financial advantage does not convey an advantage on the pitch or the club.

Lord Nimmo Smith delivering his reasoning on his judgement.

But! Noo it does ! Awaaayyyy.

  • Scud Missile says:

So BENNY nae eyes in the the daily sevco today is all giddy with excitement about sevco’s win from Wednesday over Hibs.
Apparently sevco are now world beaters and living along side Celtic with their free flowing football.
Lol what a banger we have played this way consistently and constantly for the 2 seasons now and this FANNY thinks one win away from home matches up with us,looks like another that’s been sniffing his wife’s vigilanties.

  • Marie says:

Basically it’s our fault they are totally mediocre because we have stayed within our limits, have a manager with a great eye for players, their abilities and worth. He’s a fantastic man manager who knows how to get the best out of players. He’s also brought in money from the sale of players whose time it is to move on. Meanwhile across at the bigot dome their fans actually believe the newspaper pundits and their board that clubs are lining up to pay millions for their flops. They still believe we are where we are by fluke and that’s their downfall. Ange doesn’t get involved in either the media or other clubs viewpoints. Without a doubt he’s a thorn in their side and long may it continue. Despite VAR we are still winning our games. There’s no panic when we lose a goal you just know this team will keep fighting until the final whistle and invariably win. We are where we are on merit, not through dodgy decisions or support from even dodgier match officials whether on the park or sitting elsewhere watching VAR. They are howling at the moon and the so-called impartial media are pumping them full of hope where none exists for the peepul. Hopefully the cheque book comes out again and they go on a spending spree that takes them right back into liquidation.

  • Christine Mcghee says:

In the same way rangers bought their success with Mr Smith and Co. Yes and look at the mess that left rangers. They thought to have a great team you had to have an open chequebook.. They have not got a clue how to get a great team with a budget, and how to get the best out of prayers, and be canny enough to know which type of players would fit with celtic. Celtic are just now, what rangers have not been since the sixties, a team that plays for the team. Not players when they have a personal grievances with the manager, down tools and drop points, we have a team of team players, not individuals who are playing for them selves. Rangers now have the same mentality as the rest of Scottish football league, as long as we beat Celtic we are winners. Right whatever makes them happy.
