Derek McInnes Would Have Used Any Excuse Yesterday Not To Give Celtic Credit.

There are things in Scottish football that you can set your watch to, and one of them is the near certainty that nobody is going to give us credit for a damned thing.

This is as true of Derek McInnes as it is for anyone, and in fact he was once the poster boy for it.

For years I haven’t been able to stand this guy.

When he was at Aberdeen it wouldn’t have mattered if we had stuck six past his team, he would find some pathetic pretext on which to attack the result, some early-game moment which he would go on to claim was the where the game turned.

It’s a well-trodden path now. But he was there first, ahead of Martindale, Neilson and the assortment of Ibrox managers who never want to admit we’re just a better team. What a claim to fame that is, one to go along with his two lower league titles and his solitary League Cup, all he had to show for his time at Aberdeen.

He left that club with nothing but a litany of hard luck stories, many of them involving games against us. It was no surprise whatsoever to find him up to those old tricks again in the aftermath of a game where, in the first 30 minutes, we pulverised his team.

He wants to reduce the match to a spell where he said his team defended dreadfully and to a moment where he thinks Oh should have been sent off. He’s talking through his backside.

It was a nothing incident and I was amazed our guy even got the booking.

There was no chance whatsoever that McInnes was going to simply accept that we were the better team and let that come out of his mouth. What’s readily apparent to us – that when they made the game about damage limitation we took our feet off the gas – is, to him, the proof that if his team had simply defended better they’d have gotten something.

It is frankly nonsensical. But this is McInnes at his finest, a loser making the excuses you expect. I have no doubt that Ange will be asked to respond to his nonsense.

Equally, I have no doubt that Ange will not find a detailed dissection of it to be worth his time.

It’s barely worth ours. I think after today I’ll never need to write about him on this site again.

I’ll write about that a little bit later.
