The Record’s Piece On Celtic In The Champions League Is Abysmal Pro-Ibrox Nonsense.

You would think have suffered the epic humiliation last season of finishing rock bottom of their Champions League group with the worst record in the history of the competition that the Ibrox club’s media allies would be leery of writing anything bold and brassy about how things might shape up in the coming year.

But they’re not.

Today that rag The Daily Record produced a piece of Ibrox feel-good which said that should they qualify for the Groups that they will face an easier time than Celtic because they’ll be in Pot 3 whereas we are in Pot 2.

This is all part of the alleged Europa League final dividend.

“The tantalising (Ibrox) Champions League reward as mystic model sees them get the edge over Celtic” says the headline of this abysmal article. It’s the word “mystic” that makes me laugh; this is all predicated on who wins national titles as well.

But the broad strokes of it are probably on the nose.

If they get there. Which is just one of the many things wrong with this searing piece of insight. This, of course, is by no means guaranteed, although to read the article you would think it’s virtually sewn up.

Another important thing to remember is that a Pot 3 seeding isn’t necessarily a free pass.

They could easily get a team from France, Germany, Spain or England in Pot 4. Right now the teams on their radar include Sociedad, Marseille, Newcastle and Union Berlin.

In fact, they have better than a 50/50 chance of landing one of those teams as things stand.

Honestly, I’ve already read no end of feel-good guff for their fans but this is a piss take even by the normal standards. Imagine using “don’t worry about not winning the league, next year in Europe you’ll be seeded higher than Celtic” to massage their hurt feelings.

That will really help them sleep at night as we hold aloft the Scottish Cup to complete the treble, won’t it?
