Don Robertson Was Most Certainly Not “Outstanding” At Hampden. Ask Celtic Fans.

Des Roache and Steve Conroy are back at it again today, this time talking up Don Robertson as a potential ref for the Scottish Cup Final.

For me, I would be happy never to see Don Robertson referee a game again.

Our view that he’s dreadful is pretty near universal.

They both reckon he was “outstanding.”

He was certainly not that. I thought he allowed the Ibrox club to get away with everything and anything they wanted. Some of our players were kicked all over the park. I can’t remember him awarding us a single opportunity providing free kick.

The irony of that, of course, is that we should have had at least one. Indeed, so universal was the expectation that a particular foul was going to draw the award that every one of their defenders stopped and waited for it to be given. Which allowed Danger Mouse to nip in there, get the ball, turn his man and whip over that killer cross.

I get a kick out of that. Out of the way in which Robertson’s evident desire not to give us anything of value was directly responsible for the goal which won the game. He must have been the talk of the Lodge on Sunday night for that shocker.

Don’t get me wrong, Collum isn’t much better but I won’t claim that my spirits raised even one bit by the news that he was out of the game.

The best thing Roache and Conroy can say about Robertson is that he let Lundstram stay on the pitch after his appalling tackle; that should not be a badge of honour. Not that I think Collum would have made a different choice.

But for the record, Lundstram deserved to walk for that and there are a few other challenges in the game, particularly the second half, where I thought their players were lucky to avoid bookings.

Lucky. In the same way that Ange is. Which is to say not.

This isn’t about luck. Some refs just don’t want to give anything against Ibrox.

They don’t deserve to get cup finals on the back of it.
