Yesterday I posted the question as to whether or not Brendan Rodgers should be at Celtic next season if he does not win the title. Indeed, I gave people three options to vote on, including whether he should keep it if he wins the title or not.

I also gave people an option many people consider absolutely unthinkable; that Rodgers job should be safe whatever happens next.

Well, last night the papers published details of his latest comments on that front, and he sounds very much like a man who expects to keep his job regardless. As difficult as that will be for some people to accept – I personally think he should go if he doesn’t win this title – it would, at least, remove one big uncertainty over the summer to come.

He is talking about his rebuild, which is another issue I covered yesterday. He says the plans are well underway. But when he was asked if he’s working with assurances about all this he talked, instead, about assumptions. Nobody has sat him down and sorted this stuff out with him. Which is another example of how absurd life inside Celtic is at the moment.

If Rodgers’ job is safe that should be made clear to him, and to us. It would give us certitude and create a more solid foundation for the summer. Whether people agreed with that decision or not, it would at least remove any doubts and questions and allow the incredibly tough job of rebuilding this squad to get properly started.

Rodgers seems to be getting busy with that task anyway, fully expecting that he will be around to deliver on it. There is a certain amount of arrogance in that.

But we need Rodgers arrogant and self-confident and assured. The last thing we need is this shadow of the man we’ve been dealing with since this season kicked off.

With a couple of his rivals for power already removed from the club he might well be in a stronger position to do the rebuild the way he wants it, and whilst I think that if he’s still there and Lawwell is still there that we’ve basically learned nothing and that the idea that Celtic recognises accountability has been rendered farcical, a lot of people will want to give him that chance.

If the club decides to do the same it will be controversial, and there’s no doubt about that.

But the choices might be between that and chaos; as I said yesterday, there is a massive job to do whoever is in the hot-seat. It would obviously be easier if we weren’t looking for a manager at the same time.
