The Media Cheerfully Pushes Mad Ibrox Fantasies Without Looking Hard At The Reality.

It was Billy Joel who said the words, “It’s just a fantasy, it’s not the real thing.” That song, from his album Glass Houses, was called “Sometimes A Fantasy (Is All You Need.)” It’s about a guy trying to convince his girl to engage in a little phone sex. For Ibrox fans, the equivalent is picking up the Daily Record or going onto one of their forums.

“But I really needed stimulation,” he sings. “Though it was only my imagination.” Well, they get their “stimulation” this summer, in the midst of all the disaster that swirls around them, from transfer stories which cannot possibly have any basis in reality.

They appear not terribly bothered by the cold, hard fact that their basket case club is skint. That’s why there are sites over there which are still running hopeful stories about Whittaker signing for them, and putting tremendous faith in this idea that they have made an offer worth more than £7 million. Which part of “no pot, no window, just the piss” are they failed to comprehend here? Their. Club. Is. Skint. Still, The Record provides them with the fantasy.

And over there, sometimes a fantasy is all you need.

I am pissed off with our club at the moment, and I don’t think I need to point out why. This transfer window is no longer frustrating me. It is infuriating me. It’s a flat-out disgrace that as of this moment we have taken in more than we’ve spent, and in terms of what we’ve spent we have been outspent by the team across the city which is flat broke.

We all want to believe that there will be some radical turnaround and that the next few weeks will deliver a rash of new players to our door, players who will answer all our questions and tick all the boxes. But do we realistically think so?

See, rather than live in a fantasy, we want to actual signings, not be fobbed off with talk that deals might be done when people at the club be bothered getting around to it.

But at Ibrox their fans really can be that cheaply bought, with vague promises and fantastical stories in the media, and this Whittiker one is the daftest of the lot, one that is such obvious nonsense that it’s difficult to believe that even their gullible fans will swallow it.

In the meantime, there are things going on over there which defy description, and which make the whole club seem at odds with itself. The news yesterday that Connor Goldson is in Cyprus to sort out a deal moving him out of Ibrox must have dropped on the manager like a bomb after he has publicly said he expects the player to be at the club when the season starts and that it would take a sizeable and substantial offer to get him out of there.

Well, if he’s in Cyprus talking to Aris Limassol there’s no substantial fee coming their way at all; the most that club has ever spent on a single footballer is £600,000. Connor Goldson is not going to significantly alter that. So less than £1 million. Their captain has had his “big” offer too; that’s just over £2 million if the stories are accurate.

Clement would never have signed off on this.

The club is ignoring his wishes.

He has to know he’s never replacing his captain and starting right-back and the club’s most experienced centre back for the money he gets for these deals, and suggestions in The Record that it might fund fantasy moves for both Whittiker and Shankland are just laughable.

Any player who leaves there might free up some wages, to be sure, but they need a minimum squad size of first-team capable footballers and right now it’s the weakest I think I’ve seen the Ibrox club since it crawled out of the lower tiers.

If there is a ton of work to be done at Celtic – and there is – there is even more to do at Ibrox. But we have the funds for it. They don’t. It doesn’t matter what little phone-sex fantasy The Daily Record might want to spin these people to get them off.

Reality bites. Always. Eventually. What a shock their fans are in for.

These ‘ Rangers dream summer ‘ articles that the Record online etc are putting out today really are something else man

I think the main reason we aren’t strengthening is because of the state they are in. We probably ‘could’ win the league with our current squad but the fact it’s weaker than the, already not the best, squad which finished last season is ridiculous. The champions league is what really worries me. It could end up being more embarrassing than it normally is. We all know ORiley will go for big money and he will be hard enough to replace but nobody is even thinking, what if AJ receives a big offer? Or Hatate? Or god forbid Kyogo?! There’s no guarantee we won’t lose more players this window and we really don’t seem to be interested in strengthening so if Brendan decided to walk (I don’t think he will), but if he did, I couldn’t blame him this time. For the first time in 15 years I don’t have any motivation at all to buy the European package because if the club aren’t interested in trying to compete then why should we waste our time? I don’t expect us to win routinely in Europe, but I expect us to at least try. It’s all just a bit underwhelming when you look at how much of the supporters money is currently sat in the bank.

I am astounded by the stories they are going for Whittaker and Shankland. I mean, seriously? I actually rate Whittaker as a player, I wouldn’t want him going to Liebrox. He is way too good for Plymouth and I am surprised he left Swansea to go there. I’d have thought he’d be chasing higer end Championship with a view to get into the EPL. Maybe playing in the SPFL would also facilitate that route but only if they get into the CL Group stages. If they get turfed out like last time then they are in even bigger bother than we are giving them credit for now.

Kyiv or Belgrade? Big names for sure. I am not certain either are what they once were. Let’s hope so. That lot certainly aren’t. Because, as we all know, they’re not Rangers anymore.

More like 800k for Tavernier .. they won’t get any more then 1.5 for the 2 of them combined , unlike the drivel Alan Hutton suggested !
Both on over 35k a week will be the good news hot the board IF they can move them !
As for us I am running out of patience , we should have had deals done by now for sure but I still live in hope ????

  • JimBhoy says:

The Celts as always and as I stated few week’s back will be squeezing a few purchases and maybe a loan deal as the window is closing, maybe with the sad tail of the one(s) that got away.

I am frustrated also James we need 3 strikers at the club I feel we are playing a waiting game on Idah (in) and Johnston (Out).

If we lose Hatate or Kyogo to injury, especially as it looks we are waiting on the highest bidder for O’Riley (I think is bound to go) then we are NOT readying ourselves for a successful European campaign.

Question for me is Does Brendan want to bring through his own crop of youngsters before seasoned professionals. This would be the long term plan surely.

  • Terry Thomas says:

Brendan, said before the season was over that they have been working for months on transfers for when the window opens to get the players in quickly. What happened? We have one striker at the moment and if he gets injured what do we do.
Brendan wants quality players in so spend the money and get them to give us a chance in Europe. If we don’t it will be the same again struggling with European clubs with better players, Brendan said this every time we get knocked out. I am getting fed up with this every year. I want Celtic to get a proper run in Europe to get our great club reputation as a hard team to beat

  • JimBhoy says:

The rangers to offer £10m plus add-ons for Whittaker… Jeez ! £10m just let that sink in. They would want to pay that over a ten year plan.

Looks like Tavs and Goldson going and they are trying to put more. Trust me these guys need money to keep the stadium open never mind have a team.

Celtic showing no European ambition at all it seems. I live and hope.

    • Clachnacuddin and the Hoops says:

Aye but… Says Who about the alleged £10 million JimBhoy…

There ain’t a whole lotta truth out there in guid ols Scottish Fitba me thinks !

  • Valentine's day massacre says:

Why would any half decent player contemplate being a player on theRangers books ? Firstly your agent will know that the tribute act is a financial basket case and secondly ,if you as a player who keeps up with current football events should know that they are in the poor house and signing for them will greatly damage and hinder your career….forever ! I’m not gloating ….just telling the truth .

  • Brattbakk says:

If selling those two does give them any money then they’ll spend and considering we’re worse than last year it should motivate the board to do what must be done. The surplus cash is an embarrassment now when there’s holes in the squad.

    Commentary:

fairbettingsites.co.uk spokesman Andy Newton, reacted to our ‘Next Rangers Manager’ odds saying:

“Rangers could turn to Steven Gerrard again, who is the only manager to win the league title at Ibrox since 2012, but the former England midfielder is still contracted with Saudi side Al-Ettifaq, which will make a deal a lot more complicated.

“Therefore, Rangers are much more likely to keep their search closer to home – and the oddsmakers agree.

“Kilmarnock’s Derek McInnes is certainly in the running after another solid campaign at 7/2. However, it’s no shock to see Steven Naismith, who guided Hearts to a clear third in the SPL last season, as the clear favourite to land one of the best footballing jobs in Scotland.
