The Media Is Pushing A Truly Ridiculous Anti-Celtic Transfer Story Today.

Two publications – Glasgow World and The Daily Record – have, in the past 24 hours, both tried to push the same dire story; that Celtic has been “snubbed” by one of our main targets. Anyone clicking on to their headlines dreading a story on some big name you’d been hoping to see sign will have been simultaneously annoyed and relieved.

“Celtic snubbed by Euro 2024 man as Brendan Rodgers pursued other targets” is the headline in Glasgow World, and the piece takes a similar tone to a piece which has appeared in The Record and elsewhere. The player in question is a guy called Yvon Mvogo, a goalkeeper who was at FC Lorient. Yesterday, he agreed a deal to sign for Bournemouth.

Take a look at this abysmal paragraph.

“Celtic looked into the possibility of signing FC Lorient goalkeeper Yvon Mvogo recently, according to French news outlet L’Equipe. However, the report suggests he hasn’t ‘agreed’ to join the Hoops and will instead link up with AFC Bournemouth in the Premier League.”

That’s desperate stuff coming days after we’ve completed the signing of not one player in that position but two, and made it clear that the younger player was on our radar a while and there being no doubt that the first choice was Schmeichel, who had an excellent 45 minutes last night.

As I said a few weeks ago, almost all the stories we’ve heard about potential signings have been rubbish, even the foreign stuff, much of which is the work of agents but some of which will be the work of domestic Keith Jackson types trying to stay relevant. Other than a single speculative report there was nothing to suggest that this guy was on the list of targets in the first place, and running it after we’ve already fixed the goalkeeping position is dumb to say the least.

But hey! Who cares about facts? Who cares about logic? Who cares at these papers that they make themselves look like absolute fools? As long as they get their modest anti-Celtic headline, as long as they get our club name and the word “snubbed” into the same sentence, what does the credibility of their whole publication or the media itself matter?

It should though. If they had any sense of self-preservation, it would.
