Tonight, we’ve prised the lid off the petty cash box and signed Paolo Bernardo after a 50 day campaign to nail down the signature of a player we had a right to buy option on and who very obviously wanted to come home.

Congratulations to the boy himself, and we all look forward to watching him in our colours over the course of the campaign.

He was an asset to the squad last season, and he’ll be an asset to the squad now, and an even bigger one with Matt O’Riley almost certain to depart and this guy with no history of being a midfield goal-scorer now expected to pick up the slack along with everyone else in the team, and especially with only one striker at the club.

The first big outfield signing of the season is always significant, and this one is significant for having come in August with the season about to begin. We may or may not see him make his debut at the weekend; that might depend on whether O’Riley is still here.

But we need to be patient, all over again.

We need to consider the fact that he’s not been training with the team, that he’s not familiar with whatever new ideas the manager has gotten across in the course of pre-season so far, and that having signed so late in the day, and after the US tour that he might need some time to get up to speed with the rest of the squad.

But hey, the beauty of leaving it this long is that at the very least he’ll be able to walk onto the pitch with his Celtic scarf held up, and that will let the men in the soft seats at least offer the appearance of a club making progress.

Maybe they’ll put him front and centre for the trophy presentation, in the likely absence of the chairman or the chief executive. Or Santa.

Unless it’s the chairman, or the chief executive, dressed as Santa.

It’s all good theatre, and that’s what counts, that and the millions we saved in getting a reduction on his transfer fee.

Welcome to Celtic Paolo. It’s good to have you back.

I’m sure we are all happy that one piece of the jigsaw is in place, but there are still a lot of pieces still missing, lets hope we find and get those pieces to fit and eventually complete the picture.

Am I alone in thinking that I’m not excited at all by Bernardo’s signing. He is average at best.

I’m starting to think O’Riley will stay, unless Liverpool follow up their interest. It’s not Bernardo’s fault that we’re underwhelmed so far. All the best to him and I’m glad he’s back.
