This morning, I read Chris Sutton with great interest, and I couldn’t help but nod along with every step of the piece he wrote.
First, he talked about Lennon Miller, and he seems to agree with the general idea that we should sign Miller, but that Miller will then automatically be loaned back to Motherwell for a while. He’s also the first person in the mainstream media to actually state the raving obvious when it comes to Nicholas Kühn.
He didn’t just pour cold water on the suggestion that Kühn might leave in January—he treated it with the contempt it deserves.
The only people seriously discussing Kühn leaving in this window are overexcited hacks who cannot wait to be rid of him. Nobody else thinks it’s remotely realistic that Celtic will let one of their best players go—when there are still two Champions League games to play, when there’s the possibility of qualifiers for the round of 16 and the £11 million bonus that comes with it, and when there’s still a title to win, a Scottish Cup, and quite possibly a domestic treble to aim for.
It’s a mad media fantasy to think we’re going to let anybody key to the first team leave in January. Utter fantasy. Rodgers won’t allow it, the club won’t allow it, and we are not going to weaken the team mid-season. The idea is preposterous. This isn’t something I take seriously, and no Celtic supporter should take it seriously either.
It’s good to see Sutton basically stating what nobody else has bothered to say. He used the word “inconceivable” to describe the idea of Celtic letting Kühn go in January, and he is 100% correct. He also reminded the hacks—and that handful of overexcited Celtic fans who fret about these things—that we’re not financially strapped.
So not only is there no mood around Celtic Park for a sale, there’s no need for one either. Even if a crazy offer comes in, that kind of crazy money will still be on the table 18 months from now.
I do disagree with him slightly on the idea that keeping Kühn and signing Miller will be enough—especially as Miller’s not going to be a Celtic player this season. Regardless of whether we sign him in January or not, I’d imagine he’ll stay at Motherwell on loan for the rest of the campaign.
So keeping a player already here and signing a guy we immediately send back out on loan? That’s not going to cut it in January. I think we’ll need to do a little bit more. If we’ve got a genuine chance of the last 16, fans will expect to see some players coming in who go straight into the first team. I think if we sign a decent wide player, most people will be happy with that.
The summer is where the real fun is. We’ll probably need two players at left-back, and we’ll almost certainly need a third striker. January, though, I expect to be relatively quiet.
In a business where there’s constant pressure to manufacture news when there’s nothing juicy to write about, Sutton is having none of it. He’s basically telling people not to waste their time with this Kühn story. There are some fans who get really het up over this stuff, but they shouldn’t. You’ve just got to trust the manager, trust that he’s in charge, and trust that this is not something he would sanction. Brendan Rodgers is all about making the team stronger, not weaker.
Kühn himself hasn’t suggested—not even vaguely—that he’d be interested in going. He hasn’t made a peep about it, let alone banged any drums. Quite the opposite. Every time you hear him speak, he talks about how much he’s enjoying Celtic and playing in front of the fans. To me, that’s a guy who’s happy—probably the happiest he’s ever been in his career.
Sutton might be the first to say it, but he’s not the only one in the media who knows a sale here is as likely as Kamala Harris getting a spot in the Trump cabinet. He is one of the few in the mainstream who doesn’t have a vested interest in keeping this story alive until January in the hope it unsettles the player.
I’ve never wanted a biased media. I don’t want a pro-Celtic media any more than I want a pro-Ibrox one. But it is good to have someone like Sutton in the newsroom, someone who gives balance to the ridiculous level of chatter that goes on most days.
It doesn’t hurt to have a voice raised now and again in support of the club. Days like this make me grateful he’s there.
“He is one of the few in the mainstream media for who doesn’t have a vested interest in keeping this story alive until January in the hope it unsettles the player”
Surely to goodness Nicholas Kuhn has a little more intelligence than to let these Scummy tramps unsettle him…
They are only fit for their illiterate readership (mostly Sevco fans) not intelligent players like Kuhn !
