A report surfaced yesterday suggesting that Celtic may be preparing to pay a substantial transfer fee to secure the signature of Lennon Miller, allowing him to return to his club on loan for six months. The fee in question is reportedly close to £6 million—a hefty sum that naturally raises the question: is there any truth to this?
On the surface, it sounds plausible. We now have a manager determined to future-proof the team, someone who wants to see Celtic evolve. Lennon Miller is a fantastic young talent, and he’s Scottish—something that should not be overlooked, as domestic players with his level of potential are rare.
If we step back and look at this move, it feels like a proactive attempt to avoid another “John McGinn situation.” Should Celtic be making a move in January, it’s likely to avoid the risk of a Premier League club swooping in next summer.
If our scouts have watched Miller closely and see him as a fit, then it stands to reason that we’d want to act before English clubs turn their attention to him.
When I wrote about Miller recently, I suggested that we let him return to Motherwell on loan, expecting a summer move and possibly even another year at his current club. But if Celtic are moving this early, it hints at a couple of things. Firstly, it could mean a squad rebuild is on the horizon, potentially seeing two of our three Japanese players leave next summer. And while I’d be reluctant to see that, if it’s part of a structured plan, it may ultimately be beneficial.
At the very least, this would indicate that Celtic are thinking ahead—planning for the future rather than reacting. There’s no doubt that Lennon Miller has the potential to become a key player for this club. Paying such a significant fee suggests that he’s not being brought in for a quick resale, but as a player who could anchor our midfield for years.
If Lennon Miller is signed, I hope it’s with a view to making him a linchpin for the future. There’s something uniquely satisfying about seeing young Scottish players come through at Celtic, especially when they have an affinity for the club. It’s often easier to secure long-term commitments from such players than it is with foreign imports.
Losing McGinn was a massive blow at the time, with some even arguing it contributed to the loss of the manager as well. I am one of them. If Rodgers is determined to avoid a repeat, and if he believes Miller is capable of stepping up, then this is a move we should back—even if it means changes in our midfield, including potentially losing Reo Hatate. What matters is the long-term picture, and Miller could play a huge role in that.
Of course, this story remains a rumour. But it’s a credible one, largely because it makes sense. This is exactly the type of signing that would bolster Celtic’s future, and the timing couldn’t be better. English clubs are indeed circling, and waiting until the summer might put us at the back of a long queue. Moving now with an aggressive bid and a loan-back option could make all the difference. Such an arrangement would give Motherwell both the time and the funds to find a replacement.
So, as far as rumours go, this one feels promising because it fits the wider picture. It’s the sort of forward-thinking move we need, and if it’s true, then we’re off to an exciting start in January. It’s a sign that those at the club now have a clear vision, one that bodes well for Celtic’s future.
I sincerely hope it is not a rumour, we need to grab this kid as soon as possible before other suitors get serious about him. It is a bit of a gamble that I am sure would pay off in the long run, let’s do it.
Just glad his folks called him LENNON !
1) – That’s enough to put the staunchometer off the scale if Sevco signed him – (not that the paupers can afford him of course)…
2) – By all accounts he’s an exceptional talent and it’d be good that he’s staying in Scotland even if he’s returned to his Motherwell for a while…
3) – While Motherwell aren’t probably our best friends, neither are they our worst enemies and it’d be great that they got around £6 million from a rival Scottish club to reinvest in their development structure to find the next Lennon Miller…
4) – I’ve no idea if the lad supports Celtic or The 12 year and 107 days old club Sevco (as of today) or anyone else fo that matter but he’d be dealing with a far more professional club and better supporters any day if he picks Celtic over Sevco and Liebrox…
5) – I wonder have they paid Aberdeen for Barron yet or is the excuse that their bank is Barren gonna come to the fore !
Can you really see Celtic paying circa £6 Million to a Scottish Club. I don’t think so.
I can see us paying £6m and I would like to believe that as a club we see the benefit of spending local rather than £6m going overseas to help develop a club in another league.
But I don’t immediately see this as meaning Hatate leaves but rather as an eye to the approaching future with McGregor making less of a contribution. We might not want to think about it, but a succession plan for CalMac is essential given his value to our club. And of course we need to maintain the quota of Scottish players in the squad for European football.
If we can pay 9M for a slightly above average player like Idah, then 6M for a real footballer seems like a steal to me.
