The Union Brats unveiled their latest loony bedsheet banner last night.

Trust The Scotsman to deliver the worst headline of the evening last night—one that praised the Ibrox atmosphere, of all things.

This is the same atmosphere where some of the most offensive chants you’ll ever hear were blasted out, in full view of UEFA delegates and others. Shame on Alan Pattullo for crafting such an appalling piece that applauds the most bigoted fans on these islands.

“This was Ibrox at its shaking best as (the home club) v Spurs classic delivers drama and ‘sacked in morning’ barbs,” read the headline of this dreadful article. The person who should be sacked in the morning is the writer of that headline—and perhaps Pattullo himself—for echoing those sentiments in what amounted to a sycophantic love letter. This is especially egregious given that The Famine Song was belted out mere minutes into the match.

But let’s be honest: it wasn’t just the chants.

It was the Trump banner that really revealed who these people are. Imagine being the kind of supporter who proudly displays a Trump slogan on a banner without stopping to consider the implications—or perhaps, worse still, fully understanding them.

“Make Rangers Great Again” was the slogan.

A more apt banner might have read, “Make Rangers Breathe Again,” since that’s arguably the more pressing issue and definitely would have to come first on the list of Things To Do. But I marvel at the kind of minds that create something like that and genuinely think it’s worth celebrating. It’s actually a clear sign of sheer stupidity.

For one thing, the connotations are entirely negative. Are they admitting their club is no longer great? I always thought the slogan itself reflected dreadfully on the US, and unless Trump is entirely unhinged, surely even he doesn’t believe the U.S. was the apocalyptic wasteland he painted it to be during his campaign rhetoric.

So, the phrase itself is either a con or the mark of a warped mind. Then again … con jobs and warped minds; being used to both, you can sort of see how the Ibrox fans ended up here, can’t you?

This isn’t America, though, and they’re not preaching to the choir. They’re broadcasting the most extreme, vicious right-wing tendencies in their fan base to a global audience. Remember I mentioned last night about checking out the threads on Elon Musk? Well, have a look now. I suspect some of the authors of those threads were at Ibrox last night.

What this banner signifies is that the rabid, utterly unhinged faction of their support isn’t going anywhere. They’re in it for the long haul, determined to bring down the current board of directors. But their methods? Slogans and words scrawled on a bedsheet. No plan, no strategy, just juvenile grandstanding. That’s not going to achieve much.

What amazes me most is that their coach, Philippe Clement, might just survive the weekend. You could see his argument that sacking him over one bad result would be harsh—unless, of course, the result on Sunday is an absolute disaster, which it very well might be.

But in the short term, it feels like Clement has bought himself some time—perhaps even as long as 2 January, when Brendan Rodgers and Celtic may remind everyone at Spurs, the manager included, how it’s done at that ground.

The sense of crisis at Ibrox has lifted ever so slightly, which makes it an especially bad time for their fans to unveil such a shockingly stupid banner. Even some of their own supporters must be cringing at the implications of it.

But then, we’ve long known we’re not dealing with the sharpest tools in the shed here. The so-called Union Brats are a particularly dense bunch. Anyone who watched the 8am Gallowgate Gimp Parade had already worked that out before last night’s idiotic statement.
