It’s time Celtic provided a real update on the Barrowfield Project.

A couple of times over the last couple of weeks, I’ve got comments on articles and the podcast asking when we’re going to talk about Barrowfield and do a proper deep dive into what the hell is going on with the project—a project that was originally supposed to be done at the turn of the year, then put off until January, and which is now, in the middle of March, still incomplete, with very little information available.

So the other day, I thought I’d do a little digging. I went online to try and find some information. And, of course, I didn’t find any because the club doesn’t talk about this stuff.

The club doesn’t think we’re worthy of updates on this kind of thing. The club’s communication policy with supporters is actually pretty abysmal when you get right down to it. And this is a subject that a lot of people are interested in.

I wish I could bring concrete information on where we are at this moment in time, but there is scant little of it out there. The club hasn’t made any kind of comment on it for many months.

The media last updated us, I think, in November last year, but fortunately, in January, we did get an update of sorts—just not an official one from Celtic or anyone on the periphery of the club.

It came from the website Drone Audits Scotland, one of the sites we wrote about here in the context of the Ibrox stand delays, when their roving reporter with his little green drone flew over the ground and got footage of the repair process.

The same guy put his little green meanie up after the storm damage was done to Celtic Park and the match postponement in January to see if he could assess the state of the stadium. It was very, very minor indeed, as you’ll see if you watch the footage, which I’m going to include at the bottom of this piece.

But while he was there and already on the job, so to speak, he thought he’d do a Barrowfield update, as his last video on that was used by The Sun in November last year.

If you look at the video he shot, you can see that the external structure of the building in which we’re going to house the pitch and whatever else is finished. I wonder what it looks like inside.

You don’t get any insight into that, but the outside around it still looks like a building site. It still looks miles away from being complete. And remember, this was only eight weeks ago at most.

I can’t say I’m very impressed. I expected more. I expected to see some sign that it was turning into an ultra-modern facility, and I don’t see signs of that. If you look at the footage the guy shot—it’s pretty good footage—you’ll see that there’s still a lot under construction, a lot still being put together. To me, it’s a long way from what I expected.

And clearly, there are delays. There are things that still need to get done. There’s a lot remaining to be fixed up—or there was at the time. And it would be nice if the club made some comment on this. It would be nice if the club gave us an update.

I’ve emailed the drone guy and asked if he can provide a recent video so we can see what’s actually happening now. If we get something, I’ll let you know… but really, this kind of thing should be coming from Celtic themselves.

For all that, I’m grateful that we have citizen journalists out there checking this kind of thing out for us, giving us an indication of how close we are to completion. The little look around Celtic Park—on the roof and elsewhere—was quite interesting too. And hearing that Celtic’s roof engineers had spoken to the guy and asked for previous footage he shot before the season started was equally interesting.

Anyway, this is as close to an update as I can give you. The footage at the bottom of this piece was shot in January, and we’re two months on from there. You can probably judge for yourself how far you think we’ve come from what you see in the video. In the absence of actual news, this is really the best we’ve got. And that is a shame.

The guy’s footage is provided below.

I’m not one to normally stand up for the board. However in this case, the ground temperature has barely been above freezing since December. Outdoor construction on this scale requires certain temperature in order for cement, mortar etc to set. We had a 10 day install of paths for our small community garden start in December, the guys only finished last week. The ground frost has been a killer for the groundwork recently. Communication certainly isn’t a priority for this mob.

Not to be snide about this. But what difference does it make if they provide an update? Who actually cares? I remember reading about this project and like most things that come out of the club shrugged and got on with my life.

Celtic have never matched my ambitions as a club and never will. In the grand scheme of things this is so far down my list of issues with this board and people at the top that i forgot about it until now.

I said months ago on here that the day the Celtic support as a whole laughed and cheered as Santa mocked us on trophy day was the day the board knew they were bullet proof.

I abused Santa that day the same as I abused him previously. His feelings mean nothing. Until the fans who are distracted by a fancy new signing or a ‘get it up ye to the Huns at the agm’

This sort of shit is inconsequential.

I send my thoughts to the club weekly and have done since Covid and never had a response.

They don’t care. Much like many don’t care about a construction project for the wummins team
