Am I the only person who thinks that all these Greg Taylor stories are an utter embarrassment to the Ibrox club?
It’s not just that there are people associated with them actually talking about this — imagine they pull it off. Imagine they’ve approached Taylor, and Taylor’s actually interested in the deal, and they somehow make it happen.
What exactly do they get for their money over there?
Taylor’s not a bad player. He’s been a good soldier for us. But he’s limited as a defender, and we all know it. That’s why every single one of us has spent most of his Celtic career wondering when we were going to replace him. Practically from the moment he signed.
And if you’re one of Ibrox’s two current left-backs — Ridvan Yilmaz, who fancies himself as a Turkish international, or the Brazilian boy wonder who we were told was going to Chelsea or some other massive club in the summer — what the hell must you be thinking about all this?
It’s hardly a ringing endorsement of either of them, is it? It doesn’t suggest that either one is quite as good as the Scottish media keeps trying to convince us they are. And what does it say about that club if they sign a player on a free — a guy Celtic are basically letting go because we don’t think he’s worth the wage demands and we know he won’t be the guaranteed starter next season?
We’re letting go of a guy who’s not going to cut it in the next campaign, and there are people in the media urging them — begging them — to sign him. And the incredible thing is, he would improve their team! That’s the reality. He absolutely would, because he’s a better player than the Turkish wannabe and the Brazilian boy wonder, who not that long ago was playing in the Cypriot league.
Part of the reason this is even a conversation is because he plays for Celtic, and they think in some bizarre way this would one-up us. It doesn’t. It doesn’t one-up us at all. Our fanbase doesn’t particularly care where Greg Taylor ends up when he leaves Celtic. If he goes there, I certainly won’t wish him well. If he goes anywhere else, we probably will. Other than that? It’s of no consequence.
But it will reflect terribly on their current squad. It will reflect terribly on their transfer strategy. It will reflect terribly on the judgement of the people running their club.
It’ll also be a pretty definitive statement about their level of ambition. And sure, Taylor might make them better in one position. But he’d be arriving as a free transfer from Celtic — a player we’re actively moving on from. There was a time when even the idea of that would’ve been seen as an embarrassment for everyone over there.
So yeah — go for it. As someone in the Scottish media said the other day, go all in. Give it your best shot. Try to land a player Celtic no longer wants.
Because that’s what drives up standards at their club now — signing the guys not good enough to play for Celtic. Why not? It’s worked out so well for them so far, hasn’t it?
Ahm no goin tae be derogatory about GT. Although there are different opinions about the guys ability, ah think he’s gave his all for us and he should be appreciated for that. If he does end up over there, that’s his choice.
Greg Taylor has been an important player for us and describing him alone as limited is unfair. Our whole defence is very limited. Trusty is powder puff, CCV may be the only centre half who cannot win a header in the box, likely because he’s too short and too heavy to get off the ground, and AJ is decent going forward but can be a car crash positionally and defensively. How many goals have we lost to Sevco? Was that Taylor’s fault then
I don’t think he will go there but I can see a scenario where it does happen. He is probably better than any other LB in the league & wouldn’t choose to go to a team that isn’t competing.
That narrows it down to probably 3 teams in Scotland. Aberdeen, Hibs & Ibrox club. Out of those 3 the Ibrox club will pay the best & offer the best chance at continued european competition. The other 2 if they make Europe are unlikely to make it through qualifiers & at best get a run in the groups of the conference.
If the Zagreb links are true I think that is the one he will push for. Champions League football & an entirely new experience playing abroad. I could potentially see him going to the MLS but I’m not sure he is necessarily ready to drop out of Europe at 27 & essentially bring an end to competing at the top level. I feel like moving to the MLS is either a forced move because nobody wants you (Ryan Kent) or you are going for the weather & lifestyle (Beckham).
As you say anywhere he goes other than across the divide he will have well wishes. If he goes there then he not only loses the goodwill but also tarnishes his time with us as going directly from one to the other is almost unheard of. I don’t think that has happened at senior level since the early 1900s.
Only a fool would move from Paradise to a midden. I don’t think he’ll be joining the array of village idiots but we all know his weakness so the simple solution would be to attack that left side and nullify and own him.
Can’t believe a word these anti Celtic hun loving journalists come out with. When they write this sort of nonsense with commentary from a brigade of ex players they don’t seem to realise that the joke is we’re laughing at it and the joke is wholly on them
Canny see it happening (Taylor going to Liebrox)…
Perhaps if he say tried Zegrab for a couple of seasons and his missus and family wanted back to Scotland it might happen but I cannot see him going directly there and all the shit that’ll inevitably come down the pipe with it !
I’ve always said that GT was a good player going forward and linked up well with our wide men and M/F. He wasn’t the best at defending, especially high balls but he was scapegoated by some Celtic fans after disappointing results especially in Europe, where others more culpable seemed to escape the same criticism.
During the speculation about Taylor going to The Rangers I’ve been doubtful about him going to Ibrox, recently I’ve changed my mind and I think it could be on. Taylor has just become a father and if he wants to stay in Scotland The Rangers are the only team who could match what Celtic offered him and there’s no doubt the opposition for his place in The Rangers team are not in the KT class.
I wouldn’t like to see him at Ibrox, it would tarnish the memory of his time at Celtic Park and if he thought he was judged harshly at Parkhead, then it would be nothing like how he’d be judged at Ibrox, He’ll have to hit the ground running big time.
