The Celtic sites are onto something with their latest signing suggestion.

Normally, when one of the sites throws out a name—not a rumour, just a suggestion—for Celtic’s summer transfer business, I don’t bother commenting on it.

But I liked the one that came from a Celtic star the other day about one of the players we might target in this window. The reason I liked it is because the player is both reasonably cheap and very well known to us… and he’s got talent.

The guy they were proposing is Bojan Miovski. Formerly of Aberdeen, now playing in Spain. But he’s not exactly setting the heather on fire.

Aberdeen got a lot of money for Miovski, but I never thought that move was going to work out for him. These things generally don’t. He’s playing for a struggling side which doesn’t automatically play the right type of football—and that’s where the problem lies.

I’ve often talked about football managers being architects. You look at someone like Adam Idah, who’s already close to 50 goals for Celtic—a record I think is severely undervalued—and you wonder why he couldn’t do that in a Norwich shirt.

Part of the reason, at least, is because Celtic play a style of football that suits him. Or rather, he’s a specific type of player, signed specifically to fit a certain type of system. And if your team doesn’t play that system, you’ll never get the best out of that player.

For those who sometimes suggest that Rodgers can’t spot a player, I say Adam Idah is Exhibit A. He can spot a type—almost better than anyone else. He can find the right player to play in his system better than most, and that’s why we’ve been so successful under Rodgers over his two spells here.

If we were to sell Idah tomorrow, we’d have to sell him to a side that played attacking, aggressive football. Otherwise it would be a wasted move—for the player and for the club that signed him.

And that’s exactly what’s happened with Bojan Miovski.

It happens to a lot of players. It’s not the player’s fault.

When the big guy was at Aberdeen, I thought he’d have been a tremendous signing for us. I wouldn’t have paid £7 million for him, but I thought he was the kind of baller who could’ve come in and done a real job.

His scoring record with Aberdeen was excellent. He got European goals, he got important goals in games against ourselves and the club from Ibrox. He looked quality. Not only did he have a great first touch and natural instincts in front of goal, but he had a pretty good pedigree. He was in the right age group, he was still developing, and he was a full international. It was the price tag that put him out of reach.

But if it’s now being suggested that he’s available for a mere £2 million, that’s a steal—and we should be considering going in there and getting him.

Because I know the club had watched him. I know that the last time he was on our radar, people liked what they saw and the talk around him was real. The only thing that’s changed is he’s had a poor spell in a top league—and that happens.

This is a much better idea than chasing someone like Kyogo. It’s a better bet than signing some washed-up former footballer. Or taking a wild punt on a £12 million project like Kvistgaarden. Miovski is known to us.

Not only is the player known—his quality is known. We know what he can do. We know he can score goals. We know he can fit into the way we play. He has the right attributes. He’s good on the ball. He’s physically strong. He’s aggressive.

To me, it just seems like a no-brainer. At that price tag, it’s virtually zero risk. That’s why this is one of the better proposals I’ve read recently. That’s why it’s one of the better ideas for who we might try to go and sign.

The transfer window is always full of these sorts of rumours and stories, and most of them aren’t worth bothering with. But this one? I happen to like it. Because I happen to like the player—and always have.

Is it realistic? Is it something the club would do? Maybe not.

You’d have to ask Rodgers if he likes him. If he knows his quality. If he thinks Miovski is the kind of guy who would enhance the forward line. But I can’t believe there isn’t a thick dossier on him somewhere at Celtic Park. I can’t believe his name won’t be presented to Rodgers as one of the better options.

There are deals that don’t make sense—and there are deals that do. This one makes good sense. Forty-four goals in 98 games for Aberdeen is a very good record indeed. That makes him exactly the kind of player we should be looking for.

He’s still only 25. He still has some developing to do. And since we are in the market for a striker—and since we don’t want to spend too much on one because that will impact what we can do elsewhere—this is worth a punt.

As a squad player, he’d be excellent. I’ve little doubt he’d do a very fine job for us. So I wouldn’t be surprised if this is being actively discussed inside Celtic.

It may be rejected. It may not come up to the standard Rodgers wants. But the age is right. The profile is right. The price is right. And that’s usually when we’re at our best—swooping in and getting it done.

    Adam Idah?

    50 goals?

Where are you getting that from?

Dunno, he’s made 50 appearances for Celtic, maybe that was the mix-up? He’s scored 21.
Miovski is definitely cheap at £2m, even if it was double that he’d probably be worth it.

No point worrying now about strikers, indeed any new players.

Breaking News that, cost us nothing and he’ll just be grateful to get a job, Russell Martin has “ won the race “ to be the new Secretive PLC’s manager. Ably assisted by a previous brogue wearer Steve Davies.

Given that they are allegedly likely to sign lightning fast goal machine Jamie Vardy, two guys from Dundee and a £5m rated young superstar from some League 2 outfit in Germany, then we should just keep our money in the biscuit tin to see us through the trophyless years ahead.

I liked Miovski and I thought we would go for him when he was leaving the Dons but not at that price. I def think at £2m he is well worth a punt

What is not so obvious is what he would be like playing against the formations that Celtic face in the SPL. Tactics such as these he did not experience in his spell at Aberdeen.

      neither did idah at norwich.

Woulda signed him for the original 7m, so 2m is an absolute no brainer
