Is the mind-numbing saga of Celtic and Mattius Kvistgarden over at last?

Ah, the transfer window. A magical time when hope springs eternal for Celtic fans and the media churns out stories faster than you can say “sign him up!” Yet every so often, a story comes along that sticks around like gum on the bottom of a shoe. Today, we might finally be able to put one of them to bed.

Mattius Kvistgaarden will not be coming to Celtic. So says the media which has pushed the story of our interest like some kind of mad drug for what feels like an age. I think one or two of us were slightly ahead of them in working that out.

Here we are in June 2025, and the nonsense surrounding this supposed Celtic target has been dragging on for what feels like forever. And when I say forever, I mean literal years. Finally, here we are at the end of it all.

So how did this saga even start? If memory serves, whispers began surfacing sometime around 2023. A few obscure outlets threw the name around, suggesting Celtic had been “monitoring” him.

What that meant in practical terms was anyone’s guess — did someone at Celtic watch a YouTube highlight reel? Did a scout actually leave Glasgow? The information was so thin it could’ve been served as a starter at a vegan café.

Yet from those modest beginnings, the story ballooned. Over multiple transfer windows, Kvistgaarden became a “target” — sometimes even a “priority target.” There was never a shred of evidence to suggest we ever made a formal bid, but his club certainly used our alleged interest to drive his value up as much as they could.

This endless drip-feed was a classic case of football media fluff. No solid quotes from anyone at the club. No credible sources chiming in.

Just the same old cycle: rumour, silence, a window closes, and then it starts up again just in time for the next one opening. For two years now — four transfer windows — the media has had a rare old time pushing this. It’s just never been clear how much of it had anything behind it.

The media are not exactly renowned for being on point here in Scotland, are they? They’re not even particularly renowned for their honesty. And at times, I felt like this story existed for no other reason than to make it look like Celtic were dragging their feet on a deal, rather than pursuing one we were ever genuinely interested in.

The thing about this guy that always made me wonder is this — he first surfaced when Ange was the manager here.

Then when Brendan took over, the name was still getting thrown around, as if the man in the dugout hadn’t changed at all. And what I always wondered during those first few months of Brendan’s tenure was this: was this a player he really liked, or one the Celtic football department were pushing at him?

To put it another way — this guy’s name emerged during the Mark Lawwell spell in charge of signings. And if Rodgers greeted it with a touch of disquiet and distrust, I can easily understand why. There’s ample evidence to suggest that Rodgers has simply rejected, and continues to reject, out of hand any player who was on Mark Lawwell’s initial list. And I don’t blame him for that at all.

Sure, something could’ve changed in the intervening time. Rodgers could’ve watched the player himself. He could’ve dispatched trusted scouts who came back with glowing reports that said “yeah, this is the guy.” But the truth is, it’s always felt more like media obsession than anything to be taken seriously.

The name got mentioned so often that some of us have written about it even though we’ve never believed it would come off.

I’ve never been terribly effusive about the deal or pushed it hard. I think it’s sounded wrong from the first, in part because I’ve never believed that our interest was as concrete as some in the media suggested.

And to be honest, I’ve never seen what all the fuss is about. I don’t think a guy who’s effectively been on the transfer market for two years, available in every window, and who still hasn’t found a buyer can possibly be worth the kind of money his club wants — especially when he’s playing in the Danish league.

Reports that we’ve “pulled out of the deal” sound an awful lot like a half-confirmation that we were never all that interested to begin with.

The rumours continue to suggest that he’s wanted by clubs in Germany, Italy and elsewhere — but we’ve been hearing those stories as long as we’ve been hearing the ones linking him to Celtic.

It’s impossible to know what’s true and what’s not. But it does seem like this story can finally be put to bed. And for a lot of us, that’s a relief, because this has been one of the most boring transfer sagas in recent memory.

I mean, at least with the Juan Román Riquelme rumours of yesteryear (who remembers those? My God, that one lasted longer than the James McCarthy rumours did) you were getting a really exciting, known quantity. That story just wouldn’t die, but it somehow felt like your summer wasn’t complete unless you’d read at least one variation of it. This one, though? This one has been so dull.

And so if this really is the end, then it’s not a moment too soon. I think finally, Celtic fans can put this one to rest once and for all. And I say thank God — let’s focus now on some real targets, whoever they may prove to be.
