  1. A brilliant article. You should be writing a letter to Haughey pointing out these facts or bringing his attention to this factually accurate article. It deserves far wider coverage than just the regular readership of your blog, James.

  2. Desmond certainly ain’t no Dave King, Dougie ‘The Daftie’ Park, John Bennett etc (tossing the family silver after glory)…

And neither should he really be…

But by fuck – How these Sevco Hun Hoards on Wallow Wallow want Cavanagh to ‘purchase’ them fuckin this and fuckin that !

  3. I want to believe in Sir Willie Haughey. He’s worth hundreds of millions which he built from nothing. He is a true Celtic Supporter. His assistance to Jinky, unbelievable. He strikes me as being a good man. But Jeez does he talk some rubbish and believe some nonsense. Dermot Desmond bought control of Celtic to hob job with his Emerald Isle Mafia racehorse and MUFC owning pals. He gets a perpetual dividend ffs. He’s never given Celtic a euro cent of his money. He is the only Billionaire in World Football who has MADE money out of owning a football club!! Wise up Willie!

  4. Lennon was, from memory, £5.75m, the same as the reported Berkovic fee. Thommo was £2.75m so absolutely nowhere close to £6m, if that’s what Haughey is saying.

The only two, I think, players who hit £6m were Sutton and Hartson.

  5. I personally think that Willie Haughey is well intentioned in his desires for Celtic, even if his recollections of DD are somewhat sugar coated. I don’t think that any Celtic fan of even average intelligence buys his DD story, we are aware of his parsimony as a major shareholder and the fact that he’s made a lot of money for very little effort! As a matter of fact, I have repeatedly urged him to just GO and let us get back to being a proper football club as well as a business, something we should be able to do without his interference, as he brings nothing to Celtic. His only interest is in earning even more money and lording over us as the largest shareholder, he does nothing else so again I say to DD, please just go away and leave us to get on with rebuilding our beloved Celtic! HH! COYBIG!

  6. I’m not sure how to take Haughey. He is clearly talking rubbish but is he walking the line as he is trying to build a rival shareholding to Desmond but without annoying him too much. We saw how Desmond treated Rodger’s. So he’s protecting himself from the billionaire’s petulance. Or is it more sinister than that and he’s working in conjunction with Desmond and the board? Or just trying to get more power for himself but using the fan’s money to do it? More questions than answers.

  7. Good to see you put the record straight James.
One thing that gets me though is Haughey portraying a UEFA cup final defeat as some great achievement. It is a 2nd rate competition and we were only in it because we got beat by Basel. That is the reality.

Since then, Middlesbrough, Fulham and the Ibrox entity part 1 and part 2 have made the final.

Its not really anything to crow about anyway imo.

  8. What your article illustrates James is during that period we (the Celtic fans) were asleep at the wheel and allowed DD to build up his position. DD funded 40% of the convertible share issue, allowing him to build his power base at the club. And as you note he underwrote the 2005 capital raise.
My understanding is that WH is offering his money to buy shares on the open market which he will gift to season ticket holders who sign up for his scheme. I’d like to see more details on the mechanics of this but in principle it would broaden the shareholder base and pull in more “ordinary” fans having a stake in the club – a step in the right direction – assuming of course those shares are bought from existing corporate investors. Again depending on the mechanics it might allow for a stronger coherent voice in the boardroom for ordinary fans.
If we are serious about changes in the boardroom then we need changes in ownership – and I for one do not want to be asleep at the wheel for a second time if DD decides to sell-up to some faceless “investors”.

  9. Firstly I must say the quality of articles on this site is unsurpassed.

I think this is a part of a boardroom ruse to ensure season tickets are all sold, as the timing of this and the rapprochement with the Celtic fans is a double whammy to the aims of the Celtic Fans Collective.

I’m not saying it is a double whammy but they will intend it to be. Season ticket renewal is the big one for the board and this is them pulling out the stops as if everything we want is now in hand with these two measures.

It isn’t and I fear we are being duped.I could be wrong and I hope I am but why would I trust them after all that they have done and all the utter contempt they have shown toward us ?

Not another penny…until we see concrete changes.

    1. Too late Volp. Not a single season ticket will be unsold.
Not another penny only applies to t-shirts and pies. An absolute joke. I doubt if it will even put our catering company out of business….if that is the intention.
