Why Kris Commons Is Scotland’s Scottish POTY.

|

Since I’m off for my annual ‘pasty Scotsman, gets burnt, complains about being hot and the food’ week I have got lazy. This is something that I contributed to the STV Online Writers Poll. There was no room for comments but on Twitter it got a reaction. So what you think?

Us Celtic fans, like most supporters, are known for proclaiming new signings as messiahs and legends in the making before they have even kicked a ball.

I blame YouTube. When your club is linked to a player you can search and – probably find him – scoring a wonder goal in a public park somewhere in Europe.

Kristian Arran Commons has a fair collection of YouTube clips. Most of them featuring abuse from disgruntled Nottingham Forest fans. I must admit though that I wasn’t worried when it looked like cash strapped Rangers were going to sign him in the January transfer window.

I’m glad they didn’t now.

The English born Scotsman is having one of those career defining seasons, which just so happened to coincide with him entering his final year of his contract at Derby County.

13 goals for Derby and now 14 for Celtic. Even before he had scored for Celtic the inclination that he rejected Rangers to sign for us – ok, this was quite probably untrue – had seen him gain favour with those that this kind of thing appeals to.

The majority of goals for Celtic have been spectacular as he seemed hell bent on keeping Celtic’s title challenge going. From his opening chip against Aberdeen to his dazzling piece of wing play and finish against Hearts his contribution has been immense.

Creative, ballsy, and dangerous, even in games when he is not involved he is still a danger. A game against Hamilton saw him score two goals – one a spectacular volley – but do very little else. It matters little as all good players make telling contributions while others just think about making them.

I’m even round to thinking that the biggest mistake in the last Glasgow derby was not a Greek charlatan missing a penalty but Neil Lennon dropping Kris Commons. Our play in that game improved when he came on. And don’t get me started about him not taking the penalty.

He’s a player that just seems comfortable in his ability and not in an arrogant Billy Big Time sort of way. An understated modesty; almost apologetic.

Kris is not a winger. He’s a new sort of modern day forward thinking player. Some may say that he is just a wide midfielder. I don’t know but 27 goals for a player who is not a striker is some return no matter the leagues they were achieved in.

It’s a return that begs the question: is this the best £300,000 ever spent?

Still he has proved that he is human. His new haircut makes him look like a Futurehead roadie, I fear for his size of his behind when he stops playing and his sending off against Hearts was so unnecessary that you had to feel a litte annoyed with him.

It’s really hard to stay that way for long, right enough.  In a season that has seen us blessed with the talents of Gary Hooper, Emilio Izzaguire and Beram Kayal it’s some feat to out shine all of them. Player of the year by a country mile.

If Commons plays half as good as he did this season next season we are in for a treat, what a signing he has been! Rumours Celtic are looking to get Bellamy, and the thought of Commons, Kayal, Hooper, Izzy, Stokes, Ledley, and Ki is definitely giving me confidence for next season, to add Keane or Bellamy would be perfect in my opinion.
Kris Commons has lit up the SPL and given Celtic a whole new dimension to their play, its as important to hold onto him as much as it is Kayal and Izzy,

Commons is proof that you don’t need a ‘big name’ to service your needs. They seem to be a false economy.

a great goalscorer right enough..27 fae the midfield is good in any 2 leagues..lookin forward tae his contribution next season..BUT..hes the 2nd best 300 grand ever spent, next to a certain mr MORAVCIK..if he does half as good as LUBO we’ll all be happy
    C’MON THE HOOPS!!

To quote BFHDJ,”He’s a clever player that can play anywhere accross the forward line. Left or right or through the middle. He will be a great addition to Rangers’ squad”
When he signed for Celtic, he changed his tune somewhat with, “What do Celtic want with another wide-man??”
It obviously hurt within Ibrox when he donned the Hoops.
    Good.

That’s like when they downgrade a wonder kid to a former so so reserve. What a tube.

      • Ciaran says:

I smiled last week when none of their wonder kids were picked for Scotland, Hutton, Wylde, and the other one.
James Forrest got a game though.
Maybe that was to prevent him jumping ship.

Weren’t they just getting an introduction into the dark art of international withdrawal at an early age?

    • lenny4myth2 says:

That will be the same people who labelled fleck…………………….THE NEXT ROONEY!!!! simply having a similar over sized head and playing for rangers was enough for that description from the scottish media, the s#ite they come out with never ceases to amaze me.

What next season needs is the elimination of referee and SFA bias and bigotry. The players we have can handle the rest.

    • lenny4myth2 says:

We should have an INDEPENDENT inquiry into the referee and SFA workings, if the SFA have nothing to hide then surely they would welcome the idea? that would stop the debate once and for all, also as it’s pro rangers bias Celtic believe is and has always gone on, rangers might also welcome the chance to clear any question marks hanging over their title and cup wins? what’s the problem with sorting it out once and for all?
