Sky Sports in sectarian headline shocker? Celtic Transfer Links, It Sanogo, Golf-Ing we go

|

Mad hatter silly season is well underway. We have been linked to a number of transfer “sensations” already but sadly Lionel Messi is out of the equation due to his ongoing contract discussions at Ibrox.

I believe over at Mordor they recently signed Zico, Maradona and Mario Kempes but sadly after the transfers went through, they found out they actually signed a Bee Gees tribute band. Well at least it gives rangers their only hope that they can now sing “Stayin alive” as they sink faster than the titanic if it was loaded with lead.

With our nearest rivals looking like a more proverbial “Alice” going down a rabbit hole and never returning, we meanwhile are looking like a fairytale in the making.

After overcoming a mountain of a points deficit behind our blue hooter-ed rivals, we persevered, battled and fought like spartans to now sit top of the league.

As with all battles some troops do fall slain and wounded. Kayal being now the most prominent of our injured due to the recent news that he will miss the rest of the campaign means that Lenny, after stating we will need a centre half and a striker, will now possibly look at another midfielder also.

One of our recent links more fresh in the media than others is Ivorian striker Boubacar Sanogo. The 29 year old, France based “hitman” is currently “being watched” by a few clubs but he has personally expressed his interest in coming to play at Celtic Park.

My view – He has been injury ridden recently and should not be a path we take, he seems like he is looking for first team football but I think he is looking for one last decent pay cheque.

Celtic have also “Gone to Iceland”. No, no, no the canteen at Lennoxtown is not filled with bread crumbed frozen foods but we have taken  Icelandic winger Ingolfur Sigurdsson on trial. This news is also partnered by another trialist Rabiu Ibrahim. Both will play in bounce matches but yet any outcome as to whether they will be given deals is not known.

You may all know about this news (from sky sports): –

“Celtic boss Neil Lennon has admitted Rapid Vienna striker Hamdi Salihi could be a target in this month’s transfer window.”

This news is of the norm, a linked player as you see but the sensational dismay of this story is the headline: –

link to site http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11095/7421263/

The sheer audacity of a media outlet to use such a headline along sides our team is a complete outrage.

Knowing very well our history and past with links to Ireland plus the recent clamp down on sectarian chanting, they go ahead and print a headline in the region I can only describe that as dog dirt journalism.

Your views and opinions if you please Celts.

Oh, come ON!….The guy’s nickname is apparently “Bomber”, so what’s wrong with that?

Should Celtic avoid all interest in say, Israeli players named Ira? Or anyone nicknamed “Spud”? Or what about guys named Crook? Or Diver? Or Hackitt?

Being overly-sensitive only leads to ridicule.

    • The Finance Grad says:

Completely agree with you mate… when i used to live in France alot of the St.Etienne fans would refer to sana’ as the bommer…
So for me giving grief at the Sky Sports vidi headline is just unwarented hot hair… As it does not reflect badly upon our club at all…
On a happier note he is a very good player, i saw him play in the year i spent in France when he was playing for St Etienne, and my current flat mate can only agree with me, he is German, and he recalls him being a very useful player for his team Werder… Although he cannot comment on on how good he was in Hamburg, although he did play a fair few games for them… As well as another team he cannot remeber (but he thinks they were Hoffenheim)

      • The Finance Grad says:

Well thats quite something, i never knew it was the Israely forward who was actually the player alluded to in the SkySports article…
I just assumed it was Sanna’ because i recall him having that word used to describe his style of play 😛 oh well…

  • Sean says:

its the stereotyping that they love to get us with, agenda is a word that lots of outlets have out for us, AM I the only person who can see the obvious undertone of that headline? its like sticking the middle finger up / flippin the bird behind a priests back, your tellin him to f**k off on the ode that he doesnt turn round and find out – that headline is obviously a f**k you, they are more than aware of our clubs history and irish links / fanbase, some uneducated people already have the inbuilt view that irish people are terrorists believe it or not, these people see that headline, smirk and say “typical”. We dont need headlines like that purely because it just grows the stereotyping even more.

  • JhimmyT says:

Actually I was thinkin more of the recent torment of out manager but no it doesn’t surprise me one bit that the media would find this sort of thing amusing. “Typical” I think hits the nail on the head but “water off a ducks back” also srings to mind because celtic fans are actually very intelligent people and have a great sense of humour and this type or steriotyping is what seperates the good guys from the knuckle draggers. Thats why we’re the best fans in the world so let the people sing.

    HH 1NL YNWA TAL 😀

    • Sean says:

Hear hear Jimmy, it needs exposing but yet again it keeps us on our separate sides in this footballing fiasco between each other so I see your point.

      HH

  • KevinBarry says:

Are u actually being serious?? I was reading this article thinking it was pretty good then I read the bottom part about ‘the bomber’. I don’t think ive ever seen anything so paranoid in my life. Get a grip, you’re making us look ridiculous with statements like that. You’re actually looking for something to be offended about.

  • lamberto says:

when i read this headline my first thought was they were referring to islamic suicide bombers as he may be a muslim player. Celtic’s and Irish history never entered my mind.

But in truth it’s all just paranoia, his nickname is obviously “bomber” and the editor of sky sports didn’t think twice about any negative connotations the headline could have had.

    now go back to sleep.

    • Sean says:

Journalists are intelligent people to a degree, look at what they did in the record with the fan who supposedly made monkey arm gestures towards el hadji diouf, cut and pasted, photoshopped 2 images together and wal-ah a story spat out at celtic.

      • lordofthewing says:

He was found guilty though and admitted it. He was a fuckwit and I hope he gets what he is due.

  • Jack says:

to me this is no different that a paper calling “Ki” “Dave”

    http://www1.skysports.com/football/news/11661/7392184/English-eyes-on-The-Bomber-

exact same headline and similar story without Celtic involved

    • Sean says:

its similar story ran to take heat off the celtic one seen above, parachute if you must call it.

      • Bhoyobhoy says:

Your wrong, and you’ve been proved wrong. Why not just admit it and move on, instead of trying to backpedal and find excuses? Either that or seek help for your overly-developed sense of paranoia.

        • Sean says:

Proof please? I am well aware of how the media works and how they cover their tracks so elegantly that once perceived by the eye nothing looks out of place.

Its called a law of balance.

      • Jack says:

seriously, the devious sky posted a story 18 days before just to have an excuse to put the headline in when referring to Celtic

you really need to get your priorites sorted. Look for something hard enough your bound to find it

either your having a laugh or you have a sad life

  • Craig says:

When Ki signed for celtic he said at his first press conference he said “call me dave” so that is not the papers fault. My friends who are celtic fans still call him dave whenever he plays.

  • Mark says:

Overly sensitive I think. English media outlet, possibly not quite up to speed with the idiosyncrasies of the scottish football landscape. You can’t be offended at everything you read.

    • Sean says:

fair point but how long have we put up with this for now? some parts of the press dont believe in letting bygones be bygones.

  • AM says:

As Jack mentions above, I think this has been written by someone a wee bit amateur and has literally lifted an old headline – and thought the alliteration sounded good. Sadly, you would hope an editor at SkySp. would pick up on that!

  • Larry says:

This is probably a storm in a tea-cup. Possibly, someone at some stage in the process has had a wee giggle, but I think it’s innocent enough. It’s like in the ’90s when the Daily Rag ran the headline: POPE TO SIGN FOR CELTIC. I think there are some smiling assassins in the redtop/ssn/stv axis of evil, but this is a mild example of their work.

  • Seoul Bhoy says:

I actually thought you were kidding about getting upset by this! The guy’s nickname is ‘The Bomber’ end of story! There are no puns intended, there is no attack on Celtic, no snide little comments here. Just a plain simple headline!

  • Christy says:

Sorry mate, you are being over sensitive and another opportunity for others to roll out the “paranoid” banners. Relax and let’s enjoy the football and league position.

    • Sean says:

point taken but i am loving our league position and good times with our club. Maybe i have been a tad OTT but even now in times of anti-sectarianism the rags are STILL jumping on the chance to have a go no matter how subliminal or passive the dig may be.

  • Frank Drebbin says:

Not sure if trolling or just over sensitive bitch…

  • mickd says:

    not sectarian.

    • lordofthewing says:

      agreed.

funny and could be offensive if your on your bad time of he month.

    • Sean says:

The question mark was put forward to the readers ? ? ? its in your essence of decision if you perceive it to be “sectarian”, thus your decision that it is not, thanks for reading though.

  • mark says:

I saw this headline on sky sports yesterday and laughed and wondered if someone would get offended by the headline. I thought ‘surely not’ though. But I wasn’t to be disappointed!! I can’t believe anyone would be offended by this, its the guys nickname ffs! To think that some little web guy at Sky Sports sits there and thinks ‘oh this will wind them up’ is laughable.
There is a growing group of Celtic fans who are desperate to be offended, looking for something to moan about at every opportunity. Maybe we could ask Sky or the guy himself if he could change his nickname to something like ‘The Gardener’, bit more difficult to get upset about!
This kind of thing just makes us look laughable as a group of fans, grow up folks.
Oh, and finally, how could it be deemed sectarian?

    • lordofthewing says:

I’m not offended by it, actually I thought it was amusing but to completely dismiss that the headline editor didn’t know what he was doing is folly.

Sky report about our IRA chanting. The English just see the IRA as bombers. Sky appeal to the English market by making an amusing link.

    • Sean says:

Sectarian, thats in your decision to contemplate whether it is or not.

And yes news agencies do sit their and think this will wind them up.

The media is all about reaction and getting reactions from the masses.

FYI I never state it actually is sectarian, thus leaving that in your judgement.

He has a great nickname though “The bomber” suggests alot if he is a prolific striker.

I think the Gardener has values that may be offensive to Alan Titchmarsh so maybe not 😀

  • Mark says:

I really hope this is just sarcasm here!… There is absolutely no sectarian undertone here whatsoever! You really need to get a grip, it’s fans like you that are starting to tarnish our good name by inventing tedious links like this…. You should be happy that we are actually being linked with real players and bringing potential talent in on trial other than looking for excuses to live up to a paranoia stereotype!

    • Sean says:

I am happy about the potential of talent Lenny is shipping in, his scouting network seems to be paying off majorly.

Paranoia? I know how the media works Mark and thats what they do, look at a red top tabloid, they squeeze anything for a good reaction.

  • Paul G says:

Are you lot taking the piss?! If your offened by that headline i think you need to check yourself in or the men in white coats will be round the corner! Seriously is this not a piss take? Ah and some people wonder why they get called paranoid!

  • john says:

I don’t believe that the person writing this had any intention of being offensive. The man’s nick-name is ‘the bomber’, hence the headline. His real name indicates that the man may be of the muslim faith (I can’t say for sure) by your logic are they being offensive to both Celtic and a potential signing? Your reading far too much in to this.

    • Sean says:

fair analogy, even with that in mind can you honestly say 100% that the headline is not a dig at us? you have to see what the run of the mill stereotyping none celt reads the headline as to get the statement I am making.

  • corrib04 says:

    Sean,
Sometimes I think along the way we Celtic fans have lost our sense of humour. Our Humour is a potent weapon!! This kind of article only makes us look over sensitive, humourless and po faced.

Please dont go down this road.

  • Mark says:

    Rise above it!

    • Sean says:

hear hear mark, but it needed exposing

      • Mark M says:

What needed exposing? It was a nothing headline to a nothing story!! Nothing needed exposed!

        • Sean says:

The media is a cut-throat industry, they will grab you by the throat and squeeze the life out of anything that can pull readers in.

I believe I am not the only person who notice the bomber headline.

I will rise above it, thanks.
