Meeja Moan: I’m Spartacus…. Well not really

There has been much talk of whether Sevco/The Rangers are the same company that previously traded out of Ibrox.

Despite previously stating that liquidation would result in the loss of their history the bold Chas now insists that it is intact despite the impending liquidation of Rangers oldco. As usual the Scottish media are all over this glaring u-turn asking the correct questions and demanding answers. Not.

We should not really expect anything different from this ongoing fiasco as everyone, with the exception of most fans, desperately require the newco to be the oldco.

Look at it this way if newco are not allowed to call themselves Rangers then the SPL cannot sell the ‘Old Firm’ to TV which, we are told, financially underpins the whole of Scottish football. Its all for the good of the game you know.

If newco are not allowed to call themselves Rangers then the papers cannot spin us tales of the financial utopia that Rangers provide with uber gazillions to be spent on journey man players. The regurgitation of magnificent yarns dropped from the marble staircase to the waiting media puppets to be printed infinitum on the back pages of the red tops. It’s all good for circulation…………… and the game you know.

Finally if newco are not allowed to call themselves Rangers then the game is up. The oldco fans have nothing to invest in emotionally and will certainly not invest financially in a new club with no history or as they like to call it tradition. On a completely separate note what is this tradition that I’m always hearing about?

If there is no financial investment then the newco will ultimately go the same way as the oldco particularly as they seem determined to carry on where the old one left off by buying players that they cannot afford. It’s all good for newco and circulation ………………… and the game you know.

The above is like the unholy trinity where one is interdependent on the other.

The SPL need Rangers to sell the SPL to television even in Div 3.

The lazy old journalists need Rangers to give them stories because they are actually incapable of doing the job themselves.

Newco needs to be Rangers to get the punters in through the door to simply survive.

The problem that they have is that, in trying to be that which was lost, they could possibly risk the wrath of the very people who put them out of business in the first place; HMRC.

The newco want to be Rangers, the SPL/SFA/SFL want the newco to be Rangers, and the media want the newco to be Rangers. What is to stop HMRC, or any creditor for that matter, saying “fine you are Rangers now give us our fecking money.”

On second thoughts it isn’t like Spartacus at all it is more like the ‘Life of Brian’ where the guy at the back is Brian, the guy on the left is Brian, the guy on the right is Brian…………………… and so is his wife.Everyone wants to be something that they clearly are not.

Meanwhile I recline on my sofa watching the Olympic Games witnessing genuine sporting triumph.

I watched Mo Farah win gold while his training partner, Rupp, won silver. Rupp seemed as pleased for Farah as he was for himself. A friendship forged in the furnace of the sporting arena.

Football in Scotland seems far removed from this rarefied atmosphere.

I guess we can but dream.
