Sevco fans are said to find Porto’s bit for Freddy The Ned absolutely hilarious; they clearly haven’t read the writing on the wall.
If Morelos goes for the fee the press are quoting – £10 million – then the only real surprise will be that they got that much for him.
This is a support that has spent the last few years living under a dangerous delusion; the one that says their club is essentially robust. No matter how many times you tell them that this is plainly not the case they ignore it.
Their recklessness has won them a title. That cannot be changed.
But it is no less stupid a gamble because it has succeeded.
Eventually, that gamble had to be paid for and the club has serious financial problems no matter what nonsense people like Kieran Maguire talk. Their club needs money and that they’ve gone to the fans for it shows you that the directors are, essentially, done providing it.
They have to move towards self-funding however they can, and there are Uefa issues too.
They badly need to get some of these players off the wage bill, and their signing of a new striker from Belgium on a free shows you that at least one of their current forwards is moving on.
Morelos appears to be that player, and I have never thought they’d get a huge sum for him.
The fans online who are sniggering over the suggestion that he will go for less than what a French club was supposed to have offered last year appearsto pay no heed to the facts; that club lost an eight figure sum of money last season.
The Sun yesterday suggested that the losses could be £20 million or higher.
That comes as absolutely no surprise to those of us who have spent the last few months making that very prediction.
They have kept the lights on, but barely.
They need to find money from somewhere, and I reckon that before this window closes they are in for at least one major shock. Morelos is not worth much more than what Porto are supposedly offering for him.
If that offer comes in, I expect them to take it and their fans will just have to live with that.
