It is great news for everyone at Celtic Park as Callum was widely tipped to be the next top player to leave.
There is no doubt in my mind that he is the best footballer at the club and one of the best footballers in Britain. Callum has proved it over the last few years, since he was brought into the Celtic team and made one of its most important players under Ronny Deila.
Few players have benefited more from the lessons Ronny hammered into this team and we saw the full benefits of it in the years when Rodgers had him. If Callum’s standards have fallen in the last few years it’s because standards at the club fell.
With Ange in charge we will see the best of Callum. It looks as if he might be one of those guys who ends his career here.
I cannot overstate how pleased I am at this news.
Callum is one of the best Celtic players I’ve watched in my generation and I firmly believe that he could play anywhere, for anyone. There was always the risk of us losing him to the big money in England but his loyalty to the claim is matched only by what he has brought to it.
The captaincy was the least he deserved for his sterling contributions in the last six or seven years. We are lucky to have a footballer this capable and this sought after at Celtic Park, and I could not be happier for him today and for us as well.
This is a real coup for Celtic and congratulations to those who made it happen, first and foremost the manager who identified this as one of his priorities some weeks ago.
It has to be said that congratulations should also go to the stand in CEO who will have been instrumental in getting this one over the line.
Credit where it is due to everyone at Parkhead.
