I see Hugh Dallas is in the news today, with The Daily Record running some sort of story on his recent podcast appearance, on something called GlasGo. They must be scraping the bottom of the barrel if they have to go and dig up somebody like this.
One of the takeaways from The Record’s article is that he flatly denied, on the podcast, that he is a Mason. He talks about watching a documentary which claimed that he was. You know, I can only remember one documentary where that was likely to have come across and it wasn’t one that I can imagine him watching. But let’s cut to the chase here.
Most people in Scotland should not, by and large, care whether he’s a Mason or not.
We all know who Hugh Dallas is and what Hugh Dallas is and it’s why I am appalled every time he appears in the media. Do the media give platforms to other people who have lost their jobs due to religious prejudice and hatred?
He sent an anti-Catholic email to his mates on the SFA’s own internal email system and they fired him for it. He is a stone bigot. As they say in the court room movies, “these are the facts of the case and they are undisputed.”
Yet we have a media here which treats him as though he were a Scottish football elder statesman. I have no idea who runs GlasGo, but I have to ask; have they interviewed other high-profile bigots? The only valid reason to interview Dallas is to explicitly put him on the spot over that issue, and to find out what he has to say for himself on it.
Did they do that? There’s no indication that they did, but I’ll never know because I really have no interest in listening to a bigot tell us that, “hey, I might be a sectarian hater but I’m no Mason and I thought about suing the person who said I was.”
The Record thinks his denial is a news story. I think the real news story is people continuing to give publicity to a guy like this when we, as a culture, should be doing everything it can to drive these people out of the civilised sphere.
Frankly they should be ashamed for giving him the coverage. Nothing will rehabilitate this guy. Nothing will make what he did go away.
Hugh Dallas revealed himself as narrow minded, sectarian and intolerant. His conduct was deplorable. He got what he deserved and he still deserves it because he’s never expressed real remorse for it and considers himself the real victim.
And you know what? I find it offensive whenever I see these people feting him, but in doing so they reveal what they are as well as reminding us what he is.

Gonnae put ma neck out here ! Have tae be honest. Dallas durin his time as a referee, strangely enough, was one referee i wouldve had at that time refereein a derby ( or OF game as it was then ). Right up until the 2 particular incidents which he became infamous for, the league decider at CP and obviously the inexcusable sectarian comment after he retired. Before these had occurred, ah never took him tae be biased and always found him tae be one of our better, fairer referee’s and that included durin all of our games against the ibrox club, bar that one. Sorry tae disappoint anybody, tho just my opinion.
You are not sticking your neck out all. I remember Tam Boyd said after the League decider game that he apologised to Dallas (on behalf of the idiot who skelped him with a coin) after the dust settled and invited him to ref some charity match or testimonial. Can’t mind exactly what but TB definitely said he respected Dallas as a ref.
You’re correct James. The dogs in the street know what Dallas is. If he’d sent a racist email about Nigerians for example, he would have been sacked on the spot.
Incidentally I know a few Masons and, by and large, they tend to do good works for charity and the community. I’d rather a Mason than an anti-catholic bigot and racist like Dallas any day!

It probably wouldn’t happen in Glasgow or the surrounding envoirens but believe it or not I know two passionate Celtic supporters who are in it –
One night one got well pissed – well I fed him handsomely with double whisky’s to loosen his tongue – and find out what I could about this organisation…

He said they do a lot of charity work and it’s very secretive at meetings and apparently they have to toast The Queen (Well Fcuk That for a carry on says I – while I wish them lot no harm I wouldn’t be giving up ma cherished long lie if their cavalcade was passing ma front door tomorrow morning) !

As you say James, you don’t have to be in it to be the worst – One day an Aberdeen fan that recently passed away regularly phoned ma wee maw daily and when she told him that the Celtic supporting lad that ran the post office in her neighbouring town to the south had collapsed and tragically died at work (in his 40’s no less) this guy said “He must’ve been ‘one of them’ – ah well that’s one less of the bastards now”
This is a guy that gave up drinking 32 years ago so that can’t be blamed, he didn’t do narcotics, he was certainly miserable but would be known to live a quietish life, and yet that was the chat I heard coming over the loudspeaker on the landline when I was visiting my wee maw who needless to say was shocked (I’ve been about the block quite a bit in life so I certainly wasn’t)…
Now this guy was hell bent against The Freemasons, called them bent, secretive crooks the lot, yet look at the Uber and rabid anti catholic bigotry that was seeping out of every sinew of his fibre being in this world when he was in it –

As far as I’m aware he wasn’t fired for the Anti -Catholic content of his email but was
in fact canned for ‘misuse of SFA Systems and Equipment’.
Says it all about the SFA.
Binned him because it was High Profile, adverse publicity.
However to compound the SFA’s sympathy for the bigot they then seconded / co-opted him onto a high profile, lucrative Refereeing Committee at EUFA.

You can see how they crawled out from under there rocks when they won the Covid league championship. And the temperature is building to a crescendo again fuelled by people like Boyd Miller and sad to say McCann who don’t even mask it.
