Today, there are a few mainstream sites highlighting weekend comments from Ange Postecoglou, and the responses those comments have had from some of our own fans online. There has even been speculation about it on some of our own websites.

I don’t know that the truth is, and I wouldn’t even presume to guess. Was he talking about the Celtic board when he said that the Champions League wasn’t a “Wili Wonka golden ticket” and that the aim is not just to be there but to make progress there? He’s not at Celtic any longer and I have to be honest that I don’t care that much about what he gets up to.

Still, the comments have generated attention and that’s sparked a discussion about whether dissatisfaction at the “ambition” of the club is what led him to leave in the summer.

If we look at his comments since he left, I think it’s clear that he had no intention of staying at Celtic in the long term and that he was always going to go if a club with sufficient gravitas came along. He’s done the same thing everywhere he’s been, always looking for the next rung on the ladder.

His comments don’t seem to me to be anything other than an answer to the media’s question, an answer which some of our fans have put their own interpretation on. The issue here is not what he meant but that so many people have come to the same conclusion, and that’s where our board should be concerned whether they were directed at us or not.

Because people believe it. People find it easy to believe.

If he had intended to send that message and been just a little more specific the signal would have been picked up five-by-five by a great many in our fan-base who are ready to believe that the lack of ambition from this board made Ange’s decision easy and might yet see Rodgers chose to go in the summer whether he wins the title or not.

It makes it easy to imagine us having no option but to hire some yes-man as his replacement because no boss with real ambition would want to come and work here.

This board has a serious, serious credibility problem and it doesn’t matter how many times they assure fan groups and hand-picked little gatherings that they have got the same ambitions as we do. Fans simply do not believe them anymore.

Fans are ready to believe anything that paints them in a negative light. It is hard to see how they change that perception.

They have done this to themselves, of course. They could have backed Rodgers this summer in the way he wanted and nobody would be thinking this way.

But they have created distrust and sewn division instead with their decision making and their stupidity and these are the results of those policies and terrible choices.

Whilst certain people are at Celtic that won’t change.

It is easy to apply this to us as we’ve seen it in real time. It does though seem like a message to Levy who has a similar reputation

  • ROBERT DOWNEY says:

    Exactly that.
I fear we are being left behind in European football, no longer are we feared in European competition.
I suggest there is a serious lack of ambition in the higher echelons of Celtic Park, they are all cosy with the good balance sheet and nobody wants to rock the boat.
I would not be surprised if the Ange rumour is true and yes, it was all too easy for him to leave, did the board even try to keep him?

Rodgers is now looking like a new version of Neil Lennon, a decent manager who will do what he is told.
It galls me to see Sevco doing better than us in Europe, especially with their finance problems.
If we are not careful and they win the league and they reap the benefits of the increased prize money, we could be in for a few very lean years.
Then our nest egg will not be long in evaporating.

I really don’t give two monkeys what Ange says now, I just wish that he would have fired both barrels at this corrupt wee back water that we live in and the people who continue shame our Football ,and all the Mason’s that line their pockets while doing so.

They are going all out to hand that shameful club a treble.

    • Effarr says:

I agree. The people who could expose the corruption in this country to a wider audience are ex-employees who experienced it and now have nothing to fear. There’s Postecoglou,
Lennon, O’Neil and even David Hay and Billy McNeil in the past. Even Paul McStay was
unhappy at Sutton’s comments about Dunfermline, In Hay and McNeil’s cases, they were happy enough to cosy up to them at the Evening Times and the News of The World. As
for combatting anti Irish/Catholic racism: what chance is there when the IFA. join forces with them in EUFA tournaments?

You cannot call Celtic FC one of the World’s greatest Clubs and be regularly obliterated
in the European Champions League. Ange seeks continuous improvement from his teams
    and himself. That’s him.

  • Effarr says:

I meant to mention the furore when ex Ibrox player Ralph Brand had the courage to expose the sectarian secrets at the original R4ngers, Celtic never ever has had anyone so brave.

  • SSMPM says:

Actions speak louder than words and their total arrogance and a know better attitude is betrayed by those very actions and inactions on occasions too.
“World class” is what they say they want to take the club too but we can’t do squat in any European competition and can’t get passed the 1st round of the Scottish League Cup.
Gee up now and gees all peace ya fecking bunch of lying losers. HH

  • Henrik says:

Angie was a ladder climber. It didn’t matter how Celtic was run, he was always going England (or Spain or…).
But I will add that the whole club is currently run that way, it’s a step on the ladder to a top league.

  • Melbournebhoy says:

He was always going to go to the EPL if given a chance. Dream come true. He will also go to Liverpool if offered it.
