McCoist Has No Shame. Will The Media Really Allow Him To Slip Away Playing The Victim Card?

So McCoist doesn’t intend to attend the match at Ibrox, eah? “I’m over it already,” he mourned this morning, sticking out the petted lip, playing the role of the victim to the full. Get a load of this; a guy who openly boasted about how he intended to break a law by wishing to be up to his knees in fenian blood feels as if he’s the one who has been wronged.

And because McCoist isn’t going to be there, that’s it, eah? Scandal over. Issue settled. Everyone move on. Well, no, I don’t think we will.

What is it with these Peepul? What is going on with them? Why is it difficult for those who hate others to look in the mirror and recognise what they are? When he sings the anthems of old, does he not, at any point, wonder about the words that are coming out of his mouth? That’s his excuse of course, the excuse he and others cling to, that they are just words and you don’t really think about what it is you’re singing. And of course, it’s garbage.

Let me tell you something; I always thought the Horst Wessel Lied had a damned catchy tune. It’s one of those songs that you hear in documentaries from time to time and there’s a part of your brain where it just sticks there for a while.

There’s another, called Wenn die Soldaten, which isn’t even a Nazi tune and actually hails from the 1890’s, but it was a popular marching song for the German army in the Second World War. You’re never going to hear me singing either of them and they aren’t going to find their way onto my Amazon Music playlist either.

It’s like the question Jim Traynor once asked a disbelieving Gordon Smith after UEFA sanctioned the first Ibrox club for their racist songs; “Which part of ‘F@@@ the Pope’ do you not think is sectarian?” McCoist shouldn’t be allowed back on the radio or the TV until he sits and answers some hard questions like that, or until he renounces the views he seems to have endorsed.

He’s got no intention of doing so. He thinks it’s those who are outraged who are the problem. Perhaps that’s why it’s so easy for him to wish us dead.

This isn’t a joke. This isn’t something that can be just brushed aside. As I’ve said before, it looks different from this side of the fence; it’s always different when its not your blood they’re up to their knees in. It appals me that we don’t have the full-throated support of the anti-racism charities here, it shocks me that McCoist’s colleagues aren’t telling him in clear and unambiguous terms that he cannot leave those comments on the record like that.

You guys know that I’m a fan of The Bulwark podcast on YouTube; I’ve talked about it a couple of times. Well, Tim Miller, one of the presenters, is a former Republican strategist who wrote a book called Why We Did It; it’s about how he and others in the party let the extreme fringe grab the controls. It was a mixture of fear, expediency and ambition. To his own credit, he feels immense shame for his part in it and has spent years trying to make amends.

Who wants to make amends for not only allowing the twin scourges of sectarianism and anti-Irish racism to spread in Scotland but in some ways promoting them too?

Who feels a deep sense of shame about that?

How many of our hacks are even willing to admit their own complicity in the proliferation of views like those McCoist has expressed? They still promote the “Old Firm” game although it’s dead and gone, and what does it mean to them? Tribal hatred.

What an appalling thing to take pride in, and they do take pride in it.

What else? Is it fear, expediency or ambition which makes them fall silent? Some of them are good at attacking supporters – our supporters anyway – but when it comes to their own colleagues and mates, when it comes to going after the club which sits at the centre of this and which has allowed it under its roof, they just won’t do it.

McCoist is not the first. I remember well the media defence which was launched on behalf of Craig Brown. “He doesn’t have a bigoted bone in his body”, was the general tenor of it. No? Well, I’d stipulate that he must have had at least one to do what it was that he did, and as a smarter man than me said, “It’s not the first time he did it, it’s the first time you caught him.”

This cultural shrug of the shoulders, as if these poisonous words shouldn’t be taken to represent the views of those speaking them, is disgusting. It doesn’t stand up.

This is not the first time McCoist has defended this kind of stuff; last night, I was sent a clip of him extolling the virtues of Donald Findlay, from back when he was caught singing these songs, and McCoist’s defence basically amounted to “oh come on, we’ve all done it …”

Well, actually, no we’ve not “all done it” and only a mind that is immersed in this stuff hiding behind eyes that can’t see past it could ever express such a repellent view and yesterday’s remarks prove only that he hasn’t changed his mind, not one bit. I always go out of my way to point out that the Ibrox support is not entirely comprised of nutters and bigots; McCoist thinks that all of them, every man, woman and child, are as bad as he is.

There’s no defending his comments. There is no excuse for them, not a one. He cannot be allowed to slither out of this simply because he’s not going to be there. He hasn’t said that he would behave if he was, he hasn’t expressed the wish that others do.

As it stands right now, the last thing he said on which we can hang our hats is that he would be breaking the law if he was in attendance, and based on his lack on contrition, we have no reason to believe he won’t break it wherever else he might be.

And if his colleagues, if the wider game here, does not take him to task for what he said and what he claimed to be intending to do, then as far as I’m concerned none of them has a moral right to speak out on this subject ever again. Principles are only real when you reveal them when they are most inconvenient; if you only reveal them when you think it’s safe, you’re posturing, and that’s about the most amoral thing that you can do.

Scotland’s Catholic community needs support, right now, this minute and if they don’t want to offer it then they are as bad as he is, they are complicit in his sin. So what if they’re not complicit in his intended crime? As I said yesterday, somewhere buried deep in all this is right and wrong and you won’t find that in a lawbook, that comes from somewhere else.

McCoist at least has torn off the mask. He looks in the mirror at the unrepentant bigot. It must be so much easier than looking in the mirror at the unprincipled coward, the gutless fraud.

Strange, ah cannae hear spandau ballets ‘musclebound’ without somehow thinkin ‘Hitler youth’. Just shows ye. Anyhow, hee haw tae dae wi football, but seein we seem tae be on a musical theme……..

I won’t be holding my breath to see whether Que? Adams and the rest of the Yoons on the BBC devote huge amounts of time discussing this issue the way they did with Brendan’s ” good girl ” comment to Jane Lewis.

These people are as culpable as Cowardy McCoist since they enable the bigotry and racism by their equally cowardly silence.

  • Chris McDougall says:

Years ago (after Davie Provans testimonial), my mate (who is an Orc and who went to said testimonial) had the bad fortune to meet McCoist and 2 other Orcs in the taxi queue at Central Station. TBF, McCoist was the least abusive of the 3. But when the other 2 were Durrant and Robert Fleck, the bar was not set high.

  • Gordon Raeburn says:

Mr Cheeky Chappie Super Sally has fooled a lot of people over the years but I wasn’t one of them. Interestingly enough his biggest gig since his playing days was on A Question Of Sport. Imagine the BBC employing someone who played for Rainjurs Mark 1.

  • Roonsa says:

I thought he didn’t do walking away. Ha ha. Odious fud.

  • John Copeland says:

What was wrong with Alan Brazil on the radio .? He had an open goal as a tap in when he spoke to Super Swally about his disgusting comments ,yet never did ! He missed an empty net from 2 yards away .If i were Brazil in that situation i’d at least have wanted McCoist to clarify his ” breaking the law ” with 48 thousand others inside the Govan stadium on Sunday

      Handshakes.

Tread the wrong line and you’re out.

The media sets its own standards and no one ever questions them.

That’s why they get away with the pish they do.

Trust issues are self apparent but nobody seems to notice.

Watching the man City game right now and just hearing this scum bastards voice makes me boil with rage, remember this is the scum that got his son away with leaving the seen of an accident and leaving an innocent person with brain damage. THIS MAN IS THE SCUM OF THE EARTH. and that’s me being kind.

    100% Spot on.

  • Rab says:

Absolutely stunned by the general apathy shown by the scottish media regarding mcoists comments. He should be removed from all media platforms forthwith and compelled to answer the questions relative to whichever law(s) he would be breaking if he attended the ibrox match this weekend ( and every other weekend ). He should not be let off the hook for his outrageous comments and sacked immediately by his employers at Sky et al, as mentioned earlier if this had been Neil Lennon imagine the clamour in the corrupted scotiish media calling for his head. This has gone on long enough and if the game on sunday is as expected littered with errant decisions favouring one team only a lot of people are going to be absolutely disgusted and demanding that this cancerous anti catholic cheerleading media and all other enablers who promote and sustain this poison are held to account once and for all. God forbid the scenes in glasgow city centre on sunday evening if the peepul get the win handed to them by bent officials doing their corrupt employers bidding. Will the police armed with new laws intervene ? Will the media report impartially on such events that may occur in george square ? Will mcoist be given a platform to gloat upon by the enablers ? I think we all know the answer to the last 3 questions. Finally as alluded to earlier regarding Neil lennon, what if celtic win on sunday , would the last 3 hypothetical questions be answered in the same way ? I think not, mcoist is representative unfortunately of the historical self perpetuating bigotry that lies in the mindset of the majority of civil society even now in a so called modern scotland that is not limited to roman catholics alone but in the main. I for one have had enough and if things pan out over the weekend as I think they may, Celtic Football Club must find its voice for once and call these peepul to account as the figurehead of a mass protest against the establishment created structure that has been employed for years promoting and sustaining morons like mcoists viewpoint as being acceptable and permissable in a modern (sane) european country. Perhaps the other 48,000 mcoist spoke of will just stay at home as well ? There would certainly be a lot less shite and pish on the streets of glasgow on monday morning if they did.

    • James Ward says:

Does not surprise me at all McCoist’s comment’s.Goram and Brown hounded out one of their own players in the same way because he was a catholic and bullied him till he left , his name Dale Gordon.

  • SFATHENADIROFCHIFTINESS says:

The Scottish Media won’t say a dickey bird about it. They are all complicit to a greater or lesser degree. The participants , the Fellow Travellers, the Enablers and the ones that won’t rock the boat desperate for a quiet life beneath the parapet.

McMoist will keep his head down for a while hoping it will all blow over while his mates in the Media will throw a blanket over the issue. No outraged readers letters or concerned stakeholders asking pertinent questions. They will attempt to find a malleable squirrel to fill the void. it will be, to them, as if nothing happened.

  • Captain Swing says:

Compare and contrast if you will, the reaction to comments made by a certain Ron Atkinson to this…..

  • Patrick Cannon says:

James this problem is Scottish society wide it manifests it’s self in football it won’t change because the wider establishment doesn’t see it as a problem, it’s only our culture,! Can you imagine the uproar in Scotland if it was some other group being targeted, egg Jews or Muslims

  • Johnny Green says:

Of course he will get away with it, in fact he already has, so move along everyone, nothing to see here.

The one thing that confuses me is where he got the figure of 48,000, is he implying that the other two thousand of them are not bigots…..or can the daft wee cant no count?

    • Clachnacuddin and the Hoops says:

I wondered that as well Johnny…

I suppose not many of them can actually count so that might cover it…

Perhaps he thought that 5% of Celtic supporters would be there on this occasion and he was sarcastically suggesting that it would be the Sevco bigots that would be the big bad boys that’d be getting picked on…

Anyway if he needs to look to Count fear not Swally Sally – There’s one nearby in the same building…

That Count (Dracula) is Alex Rae !!!

  • Bob (original) says:

Yes, McCoist’s outburst seemed like the very definition of “stirring up hatred” ?

A high profile football commentator, claiming he will be breaking the law,

and expecting / encouraging another 48K people to do likewise inside ibrox,

and which he blurted out Live on an national radio station…?!

Wonder how many complaints were logged with Police Scotland?

At the very least, McCoist needs investigating: if not then PS is incompetent!

  • Sophie Johnstone says:

He was on Commentary last night free to fool the viewing public that he is just a cheeky chappie,it’s not as if his commentary is of any worth, just repeating the same old expressions.Sky and now TNT will employ him regardless what crap he gets up to,same as his brain dead chum Boyd
