The Latest VAR Review Should Not Be Fooling Anyone, Least Of All Folk At Celtic Park.

For the second (or is it the third) time this season, the SFA has released a highly selective and highly subjective “list” of decisions which its officials operating VAR have gotten wrong. One benefited Celtic. One went against us. Two, hilariously, allegedly went against Ibrox.

The press is making much of this, and so are the Ibrox fan sites. They do make me laugh.

I thought we were against these organisations giving themselves a clean bill of health?

That’s suspect behaviour, and they shouldn’t get away with it. The idea, for a start, that there are only a limited number of these decisions is ridiculous. Where are some of the recent examples of subjective decisions being used to over-rule the officials?

I know the panel calls itself “the independent VAR review panel”, but it’s made up of “former players, coaches and managers.” For all we know this could resemble a BBC Sports Scotland studio team and we know what the general composition of those is.

This is not transparent. This is not a solution to our problems. VAR should not operate within the aegis of the SFA, it’s just as simple as that.

More than anything else, this is the appearance of something to hide the fact that we’re actually getting nothing at all. VAR continues to evolve in Scotland into a grotesque parody of what it is elsewhere, run by an association which is mired in controversy and refuses to do anything to get itself out of the hole it continues to dig instead.

You’ll notice that amongst these decisions is the Iwata decision, now ruled as being completely wrong, with Beaton having serious questions to answer … but only now that the Rodgers hearing, and his ban for calling that decision what it was, is in the rear view mirror.

So you’ll excuse me for thinking that this only adds to the general stink around here.

The head of referees is clearing out his desk, felled by some killing blow and we don’t even know how it was delivered or who did it. But we know that he’s not going to be missed by anybody, and that his tenure is widely regarded as an utter failure.

So, forgive me if I think this stinks of diversionary smoke.

I am not buying any of it. This isn’t a substitute for genuine transparency. It’s all designed to keep the whole of Scottish football in this lamentable holding pattern, where we stumble on without anything actually having to change.

The media shamefully goes along with that as if they don’t all know this stuff stinks and that something is far, far wrong at Hampden.

  • The Joker says:

The SFA/SPFL and the stuntmen for Sam Dingle operating VAR, it’s like watching an episode of Dad’s Army.
One comedy error after another with that nickel&dime brigade,no wonder sponsors give our game a MASSIVE body swerve.

    • SFATHENADIROFCHIFTINESS says:

You’re slipping up again Mr Scud Missile’ with that ‘Sam Dingle ‘ patter.
Gives us all a clue as to your real identity.
See you haven’t challenged my assertion yet over on Joe’s Site.
Good couple of weeks and not a dickey bird.

  • Jaycee says:

I agree that this ‘review ‘is a farce . You have to ask ,what is it’s purpose? It should be used as a learning tool to help those responsible to improve their performance as operators .
Instead it is being used to promote the idea that these are random honest mistakes evenly distributed and without bias .
The two decisions supposedly going against the Rangers is a very clumsy attempt to cover their tracks .

  • Paddybhoy67 says:

James, have you heard any rumours regarding boardroom changes at Celtic?

  • Danny Bhoy says:

The Rangers are three/four pens away from equalling two world records for penalties….in the same season. The SFA telling us all that they’ve been treated harsher than Celtic confirms why we should be really worried about what’s to come over the next 4 weeks.

We have McKinness speaking out and backing up the hard done by Rangers story by agreeing with his team being fortunate to get a pen against his Rangers earlier in the season..and yes they are going to Ibrox this weekend.

A step closer to the world record this Sunday…doesn’t seem to be too much of a leap, eh?!

    • Eldraco says:

And no yellow cards for the next 4 weeks ! Take it to the bank , what odds? Too many of them on 3

  • mick says:

You took your time on this laughable issue (aka sfa arse-smoke) Organisation? Ffs, jokers to a man.

It’s exactly why they all need clearing out.

    Thanks fr the reads.

    • James Forrest says:

I took my time? Are you mad? I write about this subject ALL THE FUCKING TIME.

      • Mick says:

WOW caps and profanity XLNT but beware the guy that runs this site blows… both hot and cold.

It’s just whatever mood he’s in, volatile is my guess.

Mssg returned without resorting to the above.

ps. Maybe direct your question to me into YOUR mirror. Hidden Hills etc…

      • Silent says:

So I’m not permitted, as per, hot n cold BLOWER.

        • James Forrest says:

You are just making an arse of yourself. What are you trying to say?

Speak English, or sober up, or whatever the problem is.

          • Deid. End of. says:

You’re doing no too bad at that yirsel…

          • James Forrest says:

Take caution in the way you pick your user names.

Certain people might interpret that as a threat and respond accordingly.

Don’t waste your time with further posts. They won’t get published.

  • Clachnacuddin and the Hoops says:

I’m just back from a boozy five days in England where I took in a Championship game and the refereeing was perfectly fine in that one and that’s the way it down there as they have to declare who they support and that’s what makes things more normal and ought to happen here…

They even have a woman called Rebecca Walsh doing games at Championship level although she allegedly made a serious cock in a game involving Huddersfield Town which may yet relegate them to League 1 but they are saying down there that it wouldn’t be out of spite as she’s a Geordie babe and no truck with Yorkshire but of course she wouldn’t be allowed to take Newcastle, Sunderland, Middlesbrough or whoever she declared she supports…

When is Beaton getting his final chance from Surname Surname to potentially do one final serious pieces of damage to Celtic FC…

Because that chance will definitely come for certain !

    • James Forrest says:

I suspect it’ll be the Kilmarnock game or the cup final.

      • William Melvin says:

        Why not both !!!
They don’t give a fuck what we think because the useless cunts calling the shots at our club,l won’t call it “running our club” as that would indicate some competence in all departments, will say absolutely hee haw.
Even if the officials led the teams out for the cup final wearing brown brogues, bowler hats and sashes with a wee flute fot the man in the middle to bring to everyone’s attention his need to award his favourite team a scandalous penalty/sending off against the Hoops to dig them out of a hole,Nicholson,Lawwell et al would sit there like Harpo Marx in silence wae the same trademark stupid grin on their coupons.
I can’t wait to hear of their demise, whichever way it comes, hopefully it will be an excruciatingly painful experience for each and every one of these parasitic bastards !

  • Joe McQuaid says:

Even at primary school (many years ago now), you were never allowed to mark your own spelling or maths tests and we all understood why.
I was going to type that the authorities are either incredibly obtuse or unbelievably arrogant. But then again maybe they are both these things as they are not mutually exclusive!

    • M.Mc says:

Joe mcquaid – brilliant, just blimmin brilliant! Completely sums that lot to a model T! All we as supporters are asking is that this nonsense becomes independent. WE DON’T WANT FAVOURS, JUST HONESTY AND TRANSPARENCY! Too much to expect, I guess

  • SFATHENADIROFCHIFTINESS says:

The key giveaway is the use of the word ‘Independent’.

There is no conceivable situation whereby you can constitute an ‘Independent Panel’ adjudicating
on ANY aspect of Scottish Football Governance that is not hand picked by the SFA to
    project the ‘illusion’ of transparency.

Anonymity does not automatically impart ‘impartiality.
It is a cloaking mechanism that denies accountability and requires the onlooker to suspend
the known, observable and experienced reality of the Culturally, bigoted underbelly of Football Governance in Scotland.

The ‘self assessment’ of the accuracy and validity of the VAR process is a ‘Facade’ as well as a farce.
It is condescending towards its Customer Base and Dictatorial towards the hundreds of Players, Managers and Coaches whose livliehoods are impacted by the decisions made by unaccountable match officials.

It’s not just VAR that needs fixing. It’s the SFA itself that needs sorted. It’s the unelected, unaccountable bureaucrats at Hampdump that are holding the game back. The game is corrupt. We all know it. Responsible Commercial Sponsors give our game a body swerve lest it tarnish their ‘Brand’. Even the ‘Bookies’ are alert to the shenanigans that go on in our game. Our ‘ Game’ is not attractive to the myriad of alternative broadcasters out there. But it suits the ‘ Beaks in blazers ‘n brown brogues’. Less prying eyes and the inevitable’questions’.

We should all get behind the proposition for an Independent ( that word again) Ombudsman for Scottish Football similar to the English version enshrined in Law.

Its the only way to force change on the SFA, they sure as hell won’t do it willingly.

  • Tam says:

An “independent” panel found 26 VAR decisions were wrong and were just “honest mistakes” and that and of the “selected” 10 “the rangers” were more harshly treated than CELTIC.

My question is can we have an “independent” panel to look at why VAR didn’t get involved.

We could then see who was harshly treated (every team that played “the rangers”) up step “Conor Goldson”.

  • FSTB says:

So in essence the independent panel are saying sevco should now be on a run of 81 games and counting without conceding a penalty.
If that’s them losing out to VAR decisions then God help the rest of the teams when it evens itself out

  • JimBhoy says:

The SFA marking it’s own home work.
