In My Memory: Tommy Burns Aftermatch 1988 Cup Final

|

As a giddy 12 year old returning from a sun soaked Hampden (in the time when our eco system ensured that when we played at Hampden it was sunny) I ran home, rewound the VHS tape and started watching the match again.

At the start of watching my only hope that the Tv did my love of Frank McAvennie and the fairytale of that centenary season justice.

It did more. It gave me the moment that sums up what Tommy Burns was all about.

4 years ago we lost Mr Celtic. Celtic have never lost him.

I was 13 6 days after that game. I wasn’t at that one but remember it well. It was an amazing season so many great games. The jungle was was buzzing every game. I’m sure that’s the final Tommy was sitting hugging the big wooden bit that the cup sits on saying he wisny giving it back it was his & he was taking it home.
When Macca scored the second i was jumping about mad & knocked a mirror of the wall smashing it into pieces, then huns won the next 9 so i guess it was 9 years bad luck & not 7.

We are looking back 24 years later & it still seems like yesterday. Don’t know if anyone was at the Dundee game when we won the league there must have been 80,000 squeezed in that day. I remember beating Falkirk in a midweek game & crown was under 15,000.

I posted this video on Youtube the morning of Tommy’s funeral through floods of tears, just felt I had to do something to let people know what an outstanding individual he was.
Sometimes wish I hadn’t bothered with some of the comments left by our knuckle dragging neighbours from over the water!!!
    God Bless Tommy Burns

  • I was at park head at a corporate day out, Tommy Burns and Andy walker were there talking to guests, I was waiting for the right moment to speak to Tommy, I got my chance I was like a wee bhoy speaking to him he was a legend, I was telling my story about the time we won the double in our centenary year especially the game at park head against Dundee, at this point Andy walker shouted come on Tommy the games started, and Tommy shouted back hang on I’m listening to Brian’s story I felt ten feet tall, he took the time to indulge me , I will never forget it, I have goosebumps as I write this Rip TB

An absolute gent. He came to the Brazen head along with big Mogga to give us Donegal lads tickets for the second game played in the refurbished Parkhead against Liverpool, August 1995. Rubbish match!! We were drinking in the beer garden and both of them sat and chatted with us for over an hour. A true gent, Tommy Burns and Tony Mobray too.
