Should Brendan Rodgers Remain Celtic Boss When This Season Ends?

One of the most important debates being had in the Celtic support right now is the one about the manager. I feel that it’s perfectly valid to be having that debate, so that we all know what the stakes are, and it is particularly important to have it before season tickets go on sale. The club is going to try and flog them as quick as possible. We need answers.

The first and most important answer is about the future of the manager. In short, I think it’s important to know whether or not he will stay if we don’t win the title. A better question is this; does he deserve to get the chance to stay if he wants to?

Rodgers may not want to. He might have had enough of this already. It would grate on anyone to be in this position, where there are sections of this support who don’t want him, a media which is ready to accuse him of anything and blame him for everything and a board which may not want to support his vision even as their own crashes to ruins.

That’s for winning the title. I suspect that if we do that he’ll be here in the next campaign and doing his level best to lead the rebuild. The board may not want him to though, and that’s something we should all bear in mind. They may decide to get rid of him whether he wins the title or not. We should keep in mind that to some of them he has failed to keep to his own brief; he has not made best use of the squad at his disposal.

But if he loses the title a lot of us are going to feel that the matter should be taken out of his hands. The seven point lead we’ve blown should, and would, have been enough to give a manager breathing space. We’ve made a real mess of things instead. On top of that, we’ve somehow squandered that lead having beaten them twice, which makes it worse.

The section of the support that never wanted him back certainly won’t want to see him stay. Even people like me, who broadly welcomed his return, were pretty clear that our support for him was predicated on his record and his ability to get over the line. If that’s no longer to be taken for granted, how long will our support last?

I’m curious to see what the views are, so please post them on the page and vote in the poll. Let us know what you think on the issue, and it’s the biggest one we’re facing as a club.

Should Rodgers be manager at Celtic when the season ends?

He should only stay if Celtic wins the league

He should only stay if Celtic wins the league

He should stay regardless of winning the title

He should stay regardless of winning the title

He should go regardless of the outcome

He should go regardless of the outcome

    Ofcourse100%.

  • Jim says:

He would have to either get the players to work with his system, or dare say start from scratch with his tactics, some of the games have been woeful, whatever happened since the athletico Madrid game where the tactics and formation changes were spot on to now playing the way we have since Dec is night and day.
Personally I think the media shite he’s had to endure has been disgusting, and God knows how a new manager would cope with similar press attack dogs on their case constantly.

    • Clachnacuddin and the Hoops says:

Most decent clubs would root out and ban the media scumbags that are crossing the line in the sand…

There are people at Celtic who could do this but simply won’t –

Rotten from the top down is The PR at Celtic !

      • Jimmy says:

        For crying out Clachnacuddin.
Every post you make is absolutely depressing. It has sweet fa to do with the media. Why mention them.
This had to do with Rodgers and the current state of our team, we are in dissaray yet every post is from you media and the Sfa. Open the curtains ffs, get some sunshine. Go have a break. Take a tent up the highlands or something.
You write about three stories with the same negative overtones.
Your story about the Scotland national team and hoping they get beaten. I work hard all week. My passion outside of my family is Football. Celtic and Scotland. You hope Scotland get beaten was what you wrote in another rant. Let me tell you this. McGregor Tierney Taylor Armstrong Christie MCginn and Robertson and others including Stevie Woods like myself couldn’t give a flying fox about your opinion. You are a bitter man, I have a laugh at follow follow and the muppets, you would fit in perfectly there as they are anti Scotland as well. My brothers are going to the Euros and like me look forward to it to escape from every day dramas. They like the fans will have a great time because of the break from work and a few beers will be had. All in good spirits not giving a heck about the Sfa. As I said, try and be happy, you might find you like it.

    • Eugene Ritchie says:

He needs his own transfer window, not Lawells,he will hopefully have players in mind, for me he was misled when he came bk,he needs to be the main man in Celtic Park, just like Ange was

  • Kestrel67 says:

Tried to vote, it’s not working. Regardless of what happens he should get the chance to sign players that he actually wants.

  • Bhoy59 says:

It’s ridiculous to ask people to vote on this when there is still two trophies to play for(I didn’t want him back however his record over two spells would be fantastic). The time for this discussion is at the end of the season.

  • Joe Turner says:

If we don’t win the league, I can’t see how he can stay on.

  • Steven Gerome says:

    He absolutely should be.

    • Anthony McKeirnan says:

Ordinarily I’d say blowing a 7 point lead is unforgivable but I think the only chance of meaningful change at the club regarding ambition and recruiting only happens if he’s pressuring Desmond to make those changes, if he goes do the likes of liewell slink on in the background with neverending cycles of cheap promising players who just about win here and get sold as soon as they’re hitting the kind of levels that could make us a decent competitive European level team and by default unassailable at home?

  • Legend07 says:

    100%
Give him the players that he wants and we need no more projects unless their out numbered with experienced signings

  • Kingmurdy says:

I’ve no ill feeling towards him…when he left,i couldnt blame him…he wasn’t backed by lawwell and his band of bastards…same again now..terrible appoinment for both celtic and himself…i’d bet he was only back a couple of months,if not sooner, and he questioned the wisdom of having accepted the post a second time…he’s been treated terribly by all concerned…BUT…he’s a big boy…shouldn’t have allowed his ego to take over…he should have kicked up fuk in the summer..but didn’t for some reason….ah well…eddie howe might be looking for a job come summer…..
Indeed…a club like no other…FAIL FAIL

  • Paul mcgee says:

I’d like hime gone. The football is terrible, his tactics are dated. He’s a manager on the decline. This will be his last big job. His bullshit has caught up with him and players are just not giving thete all for him no more.
God knows who I’d like to replace him mind you. Got to go in my book!

  • peterbrady says:

Everyone knows we are being cheated but we can overcome this that’s why we are Glasgow Celtic James put the spotlight on sevco on big pissior on corrupted officials corruption in SFA SPFL keep the faith HAIL! HAIL! WE CAN DO THIS.

  • billy johnson says:

I think no manager or player should ever go back. Brendan left as he did,by doing this his reputation with the Celtic fans was in tatters. Being as we are, the Celtic fans accepted his appointment and the majority got behind him. We don’t know what went on behind the scenes for him to leave, and my hunch is there’s more than something going on this time. The departure of lawel junior makes this obvious. Fans need answers before next season starts. Fans need a strong personality to stand up to the board the way Ange and Martin before him did. I fear Brendan’s not got that same presence or fight in him to carry the fight. Signings have not been his. That’s obvious!. We need a big clear out starting at the very top. Will we get it? I very much doubt it

  • KC67 says:

Set up to fail by Lawwell and the board. That’s been the source of our poor season.

They can sack as many managers as they like, nothing changes until the root cause is eradicated, and that’s Desmond and Lawwell.

  • SSMPM says:

If he does stay and I 100% hope he does and is allowed to get the players he wants in then it will be like next season will be like the starting place that he should have had from last summer.
Quite frankly he was the manager that got us that 7 point league. It was only when the injuries to important influential players occurred that the slide began. With their return and in spite of some MIB I think this season can be turned around and successful. At least in outcomes anyway.
The man’s had no backing, bad luck with injuries to important players, no choice in recruitment and a plot enacted by some refs.
We only need a few quality additional players if the 1st team players stay and Liewell goes and then the flapping will stop from so called supporters. HH

  • Clachnacuddin and the Hoops says:

He simply has to win The League or he’s out…

I’m not sure if they’d sack him to try to save his own skin (there’s the financial cost as well and finance is their alleged God)…

He might ‘engineer’ it to go himself as he wouldn’t wanna face a Sevco with serious millions in prize money of which EVERY LAST PENNY would go to Clement for his ‘war chest’ –

If it was to be the latter, then I’d hope that he’d take Lawwell and Lord Lucan-Nicholson with him on the way to the bottom of the football ocean !

  • Michael Clark says:

You’ve asked me to leave a comment whether Brenden Rogers should remain as Celtics manager. You above all people should know (or already realise) the problem is NOT with the manager. Celtic supporter’s have vented their feeling long enough regarding the running of the club. When Ange Postecoglou came to town it was a breath of fresh air but he pulled rabbits out of the hat. We just got lucky with this guy. The board is the problem, their not Celtic orientated, their money men. Its all about money, they dont know where London Road is

  • Effarr says:

Better the devil you know and all that. Anyway, who would you get other
than someone with no affinity to Celtic. That`s the only thing John Kennedy has going for him, he`s Celtic through and through. I can`t imagine Celtic for probably the first time in history having a manager and backroom staff with absolutely no great affinity to the club. Terrible thougjt.

  • Jim says:

Normally I’d say he should get at least a year to “rebuild” but if he doesn’t win the league I think he should go. A good core of the team that won the Treble remains (note some major departures) and they haven’t only regressed they have looked dismal as much as they’ve looked good. Moreover Rodgers has made 0 adjustments in the face of this. I understand this isn’t “his” team but that’s part of being a coach. The Board shares a good deal of blame but it’s hard for me to overlook the above.

  • Jim says:

    Also Steve Cooper is available…

  • Marc McElligott says:

Brendan Rodgers is certainly not blameless for the predicament we find ourselves in at the moment. But for the most part IMHO the blame lies squarely with Desmond, Lawwell (both) and their lapdogs on the board who’s ultra conservative approach to our first team has brought us to this juncture. They are the ones who need to go.

  • SSMPM says:

Too much doom and gloom. Like this survey it’s better left to the end of the seaso, though I’m glad to see such a high support for Brendan, so far anyway. I think his recent outspoken comments have definitely warranted backing and raised his standing somewhat.
Seems too many have already decided the outcome of the league and cup and that seems very unsupportive where support is required. C’mon a Hoops
