Rodgers Talks Like A Man Who Knows His Celtic Future Already.

Yesterday I posted the question as to whether or not Brendan Rodgers should be at Celtic next season if he does not win the title. Indeed, I gave people three options to vote on, including whether he should keep it if he wins the title or not.

I also gave people an option many people consider absolutely unthinkable; that Rodgers job should be safe whatever happens next.

Well, last night the papers published details of his latest comments on that front, and he sounds very much like a man who expects to keep his job regardless. As difficult as that will be for some people to accept – I personally think he should go if he doesn’t win this title – it would, at least, remove one big uncertainty over the summer to come.

He is talking about his rebuild, which is another issue I covered yesterday. He says the plans are well underway. But when he was asked if he’s working with assurances about all this he talked, instead, about assumptions. Nobody has sat him down and sorted this stuff out with him. Which is another example of how absurd life inside Celtic is at the moment.

If Rodgers’ job is safe that should be made clear to him, and to us. It would give us certitude and create a more solid foundation for the summer. Whether people agreed with that decision or not, it would at least remove any doubts and questions and allow the incredibly tough job of rebuilding this squad to get properly started.

Rodgers seems to be getting busy with that task anyway, fully expecting that he will be around to deliver on it. There is a certain amount of arrogance in that.

But we need Rodgers arrogant and self-confident and assured. The last thing we need is this shadow of the man we’ve been dealing with since this season kicked off.

With a couple of his rivals for power already removed from the club he might well be in a stronger position to do the rebuild the way he wants it, and whilst I think that if he’s still there and Lawwell is still there that we’ve basically learned nothing and that the idea that Celtic recognises accountability has been rendered farcical, a lot of people will want to give him that chance.

If the club decides to do the same it will be controversial, and there’s no doubt about that.

But the choices might be between that and chaos; as I said yesterday, there is a massive job to do whoever is in the hot-seat. It would obviously be easier if we weren’t looking for a manager at the same time.

You keep saying and I agree with you that basically that the only people that can get blamed for this season is the board and the scouting department.
So why would Brendan deserve to be sacked

    • Droopy McCool says:

Because he’s unable to come up with any kind of game plan that gets a return out of our best striker since Henrik. No disrespect to Idah, I think he’s done OK, but he has no scoring record, and he’s third choice at Norwich as far as I know, he’s nowhere near as good as Kyogo. Nowhere near. And he’s a loan that won’t be here next season. Look at O’Riley and the understanding he had with Kyogo, gone.

      • Iljas Baker says:

Kyogo has had plenty of chances and missed them and apart from not taking them he does very little. Players do suffer a drop in form for a variety of reasons and it’s not always the manager’s fault. I don’t think it’s that BR style of play is boring per se, he just hasn’t got the players to implement it – too slow, lacking in aggression and technical ability. People forget for all the swashbuckling football that Ange gave us, at times, especially towards end of season, we were poor and a total loss in Europe. And Rangers never had a decent manager or team when Ange was our boss. Ange would have needed something of a rebuild too and one of the reasons he left perhaps that he was aware he wouldn’t get the funds. I wasn’t for BR returning but now I think it would be more of a disaster to get rid of him. But he needs funds to rebuild and I believe that will require a change in the administrative side of things. Is that likely?

Who are we going to get if Brendan leaves, big Sam??

  • Ronan says:

You’ve an astonishing level of entitlement if u think he should go. So, we hire someone new who was to assess the squad and start a whole new rebuild. Great idea there…..Rodgers has shown he’s very capable with the right type of quality players. He’s been let down by recruitment injuries unhappy players etc

  • Dan says:

Hard to take another season of zero entertainment, win or lose his style is awful to have to pay money to watch. I’ll be doing something else with my Saturdays

  • Stephen McDowell says:

James, there appears to be a lot of animosity towards Rodgers including from you, everybody is entitled to their opinion especially those who know the club inside out but facts trump opinions and I think it’s worth pointing out that Rodgers knows the club….yes he left in controversial circumstances but that’s years back and he’s here now, he was a winner at Leicester until his last year when he had to deal with massive boardroom problems and money issues {sound familiar?} he took over in the summer and was handed someone else’s {sub standard} players, he has a track record of improving players and despite the plate of sh*t he’s been handed, we are still in the cup and have the leagues destination in our hands. Do we want to be a club that changes manager on a regular basis? or do we back him to drag us out of this mostly self inflicted mess? in my opinion the board has far more questions to answer than the manager.

I thought that all fair minded fans would agree that Brendan Rodgers
has attempted to surmount many barriers hampering Celtic FC success,
to the very best of his ability. Conditions at the Club will get better.
He has lost fantastic players by transfer as well as injuries to CCV and Reo.
I believe Kyogo shoulder problem may need surgery. An AC injury to the shoulder is serious. He can beat Rangers. That’s a positive. I believe Brendan has unfinished business
at Celtic. There are a few things I did not like about his management praxis, but now I
    like him.

  • John McGovern says:

When he came in he said he had assurances about budget but we ended up with substandered players and wasted a load of money, then he seems to distance himself from these signings, if we don’t win the title I think it would be unfair to hold him fully responsible he does have to take a little bit of the blame but not all, if he going to stay and rebuild the team they need to be his signings

  • Robert Downey says:

It’s imperative that we have a manager in place, whoever that is, before the next transfer window.
    If it is Rodgers, fine.
The last thing we need or want is Lawwell buying in players who he himself fancies, that is the last thing we need, it has cost us dearly in the past.

  • Frank Connelly says:

the clear out and rebuild is gonna be a massive job. That much dead would hanging around its just as well we have a right few quid in the bank. How did it ever get into this mess. Well I think we know the answer to that and part of the problem is still in situ

  • joe mcquaid says:

As big a question for me is will Celtic recalibrate the business model? The financial rewards within Scotland haven’t really changed in the last 20 years and our business model appears tied to this. However the rewards in Europe have skyrocketed (whether this is a good thing or not is another debate. We need to better reflect this in our transfer dealings and salary structure. This might mean a smaller but better first team squad – for example why do we have three GKs in the first team squad? When have we had such a GK crisis that third choice has played?

  • bertie basset says:

we all thought the plan for 2023 / 24 was him putting his mark on signings and the team and i’m sure so did he , but alas it was not to be
lawell let him down this season and i’m sure rodgers knows he will again next season , he’s sending out coded messages to the board that he has no intention of leaving unless he’s paid off , he would be an eejit to walk
what troubles me is why did lawell desmond and co lure rodgers out of retirement to celtic with a promise of putting his mark on the team and money to finance new players , and then deny him those resources , they must have know that agenda would fail resulting in a pay off costing the club millions and further millions in C L monies it is obvious that lawell and desmond have fallen down here , this board couldn’t run a drag hunt not to mention CFC

  • Thomas Mcgrattan says:

And why do you think he should go he can only work with the players he has yous people ought to get a grip when he was winning leagues and trophies he was a GOD

  • JimtheTim says:

In fairness it does not matter what you or people think. I stated weeks if not months ago the Brendan will keep his post regardless of silverware.

We lost pivotal players this season either through transfers or injury. Transfers have been wrong. Also people forgetting that even though we won a treble last season from March to the end of the season we were pretty unconvincing and stumbled over lots of matches, the Scottish Cup final was not a great performance either.

End of the day Celtic will not sack Rodgers and he will not walk away so instead of aiding SMSM with the negativity support the team.

  • Sid says:

I voted he should be allowed to stay when we lose the league however I’m equally happy for a total clearout. What definitely can’t happen is Lawwell stays regardless of winning the league or BR staying or going. I actually think Nicholsons job is also untenable because technically he is responsible for the hiring of both Lawwells which has us in a right mess from a position of strength. Oh and Desmond owes the Celtic support an apology, that’s twice he and the board were warned that they were sleeping at the wheel and they did nothing and twice we’ve crashed. Dare I say it, its almost deliberate.
I also think fans shouldn’t renew until assurances are given and proposals are drawn up to change the refeering. Why continue to pay to be cheated? It’s crazy!

  • SSMPM says:

If Brendan inherited the Ange team, had a say in which players came in and had the board’s backing then I’d agree that he should go.
He didn’t though. We lost several quality players before the season started including one that most forget in Mooy.
He’s had those players leave sold off, retire before he even started
Really unnecessary signings that helped the squad not a joy.
Injuries to significantly important players not a jots to replace them with.
    No board backing.
So why or why should he carry the can.
He’s also had a pop at corrupt authorities including refs something out board can’t even bring themselves to say.
So your answer is bring someone else that may be forced to suffer the same.
That’s not a solution worthy of sensible thinking or the word solution.. HH

  • SSMPM says:

Above should read ‘not a jot’.

You need to stop changing like the weather and keep firmly focused on the board, Lawwell in particular. HH

  • Clachnacuddin and the Hoops says:

Brendan or no Brendan – We need to get some bigger and stronger guys in the team ASAP…

We get manhandled and bullied all over the place…

Sevco at Liebrox, no supporters, possibly no Brendan in the technical area…

And the cheats with whistles, flags and monitors with carte blanch to run amok…

What in the fcuk can possibly go wrong !
