We Are ‘Illicit’. Now Over To The Board.

|

EUFA today fined us £12,700 for ‘illicit chanting’ during our victory against Rennes in Europe’s premier second competition.

The match commander, assorted MP’s and high ranking bodes, who have selective hearing will be pleased. Isn’t there a bill to be passed this week?

Though this is a set up, we can’t deny that UEFA had us bang to rights with article 11 declaring:

“the use of gestures, words, objects or any other means to transmit any message that is not fit for a sports event, in particular if it is of a political, offensive or provocative nature.”

The interesting part now comes in our boards reaction. They have been vocal and unequivocal in their want for the chants to stop. Below is a screenshot of newsnow. It’s made the news the world over.

The brand has been damaged. I’m sure Peter is not happy when the brand is dragged through the mud.

A rebuttal and appeal? Or acceptance and a “we told you so“?

Developing.

I have always disagreed with the IRA songsat Celtic games with so many songs to sing why did we keep going back to the singing that we were told would land us in trouble , it does not matter that these songs are not sectarian or bigoted it doesn t matter that anything can be now deemed offensive a fines can be imposed ..on this one subject the Celtic support played right into the hands of those who wish to hammer us , so what have we achieved

  • mick says:

yes an appeal why were celts fined when others dont get fined know what should be done is any club live games anything heard should be reported to eufa not the fa of any country ,if the fans get filmed they should film the people who film them ,the clubs should set up mics in all areas to hear what songs get sung ,we in scotland have clubs running year to year basicly bankrupt the sfa still allow them into europe each year although they dont meet the critiria this shoulbe looked at aswell plus the people that let it happen .Is this realy the type of nanny state scotland want shop everybody for everything sectarin stuff is bread at child age if they are wanting it stopped start with the kids then the marches the police the politicians anybody that is affiliated to any body that has underlying tones
i dont think scots want this kind of state i think people want honesty and truth not hidden agendas and lies

I believe there are a couple of songs and add ons our support should stop singing, not for a section of raging Rangers fans, as they are angered into hysteria by things like Lennons mannerisms or his haircut and Celtic supporters NOT singing sectarian or racist songs bewilderingly enrages them. We need to do it for our club and its reputation outside the permaragers in the west of Scotland. Fans across continental Europe and down south have no clue what specific events our support are referring to, and we don’t need or want the “as bad as each other” tag anymore.
Genuine question, im curious if this has been mentioned anywhere, are songs referring to paedophilia going to be dealt with? I find these types of songs the most vulgar and offensive. With children inside stadiums and watching games on television it’s disgraceful. Anyone know if it has been mentioned anywhere? I think it undoubtedly must be classed as illicit and offensive.

The other songs point is interesting and one that hasn’t been discussed when the topic of ‘Slamonds Law’ is brought up.

Today, the both as bad as each other tag rings true to the wider world. Surely a line in the sand?

  • co antrim says:

Is the poppy now banned from football shirts at games? Surely the poppy display has nothing to do with a sporting event.

  • Jbhoy says:

Who was offended by it? Surely most national anthems are political? What about when scots shout Argentina?

So now of course we can resort to the usual game of “whitabootery”. Which never solves anything, but no doubt it’ll make a few of our keyboard martyrs feel a bit better by giving them the opportunity to ask the usual dumb questions ~~ so they don’t have to admit to their own stupidity, which caused the club they supposedly “support”, to be fined in the first place.

And the jailhouse lawyers and the forum heroes will also have a field day, pontificating upon endless reasons as to why the fine should be appealed or revoked.

Unsurpisingly, it won’t cross what passes for their mind, that the club would never have been fined in the first place if they’d stopped the chants AS REQUESTED MANY TIMES PREVIOUSLY BY THE CLUB. They’ll now be far too busy showing those Mordor residents that they’re not the only ones who can stand on their dignity!

It’s just a pity that these clowns can’t be made to pay the fine, as I bet their highly-prized and much-vaunted “rights” would take second place to their wallet.

    • lordofthewing says:

Great post. I reckon if we appealed we would get a suspended sentence/fine due to preceedence set on political chanting but I don’t think we have the will or the want to appeal.

  • sixtaeseven says:

Celtic must appeal and get their name cleared.

As even the blue-nosed SPL admitted thru gritted teeth, the club has taken all possible steps to eliminate the alledgedly illicit chants and can’t be faulted.

UEFA are opening pandora’s box here (and I don’t mean in Aul’ Scotia).
Political, and well as racist, sectarian and sexist chants are rife throughout Europe.

Spain and Italy are particularly racist.

For the record, I don’t fancy hearing “up the RA” at games, but it’s not illegal.

    Dear LOTW….
I can confirm that Dick Turpin also got a suspended
    sentence…..
    They hanged him……
Be careful what you wish for……
    Hail hail.
PS: Like it or not….the chants will have to stop..
    so why not start now?
    As for appealing….The Club won’t….
